Scammer dupes another person

I hired JAS Handyman Services to do some work at my elderly mom’s rental. Got a bid and gave him $1100 to start the project. He never showed and gave one excuse after another why he couldn’t get to the job …traffic, lost phone, helper didn’t show, lost jacket, lost keys, yadda yadda yadda. Total scammer who will just string you along, tell whopper of lies and never do any work. I found him on Next Door . Originally from Montana but seems to live in Colorado now. Using the same numbers it would seem. 100% a scammer.

We hired Handyman to Sister 2x4s that overhang roof on two sides of the house, install a facia board and gutter s on both sides of the house. A proposal from Mr. Smith estimated $14000. We paid him down payment for materials. It was agreed upon in writing that Mr. Smith would do the job for a two-week period in August. I flew to Missoula from Maryland to oversee the agreed upon contract job. During the first week Mr. Smith kept texting us telling us he had other work but would eventually get to us. In the following week he told us one of his plumbers messed up and he would have to fix the problem in another town. On Wednesday of week 2 he told us he would definitely start the job but never showed. All we received were excuses. We have asked him for our money back, but he refuses to return it. We have filed a small claim complaint against him. We still are without our money.
