Home Improvement - Parnell Roofing and Renovations Reports & Reviews (2)

• May 20, 2025

I had seen this company, Parnell Roofing & Renovations, in my neighbourhood. I had asked one person how the work had gone and they were satisfied. On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4, 2024, I happened to spot the truck nearby and asked the fellow (Toni Parnell) if he would come to have a look at my basement ceiling, as I had concerns about the joists (the house is semi-detached and 100 years old). He came by my house, inspected the ceiling joists and said he wouldn’t be able to sleep that evening, knowing how bad things were and immediately got two support posts set up. Fixing the joists would cost approximately $11,000, which I paid in cash the next day.

Wednesday, Toni brought in a structural engineer who inspected the basement and said that the exterior wall was in danger of collapsing and it would cost approximately $60,000 to do underpinning. They asked for a $15,000 certified cheque to get the job started, which I provided that day. Workers were there almost immediately, breaking up the concrete floor and digging beside the wall. The next morning, Thursday, another assessment of the basement was done and I was told that more work would have to be done – to the tune of an additional $65,000. Again I provided a certified cheque for $15,000.

Friday, they asked for another $15,000. I went to the bank, but didn’t end up giving the cheque to them. My bank was starting to get concerned, as the cheques weren't being made out to the company, but to an individual. Toni had assured me that this individual was the ‘big boss’ and owned the company. After not handing over the cheque to his worker who had driven me to the bank, Toni started to phone and text me, as well as this other person, Connor Brown. I told him that he or Toni could come by on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. and we’d discuss the status of the work. During one of the conversations with Connor Brown, he told me he owned the company and Toni Parnell was his employee. And Connor Brown was not the individual the $15,000 cheques were made out to.

On Saturday I phoned a masonry company who had done a small job for me a couple of years ago. The representative came to my house, along with a structural engineer who does work for the City of Toronto. To my horror, that structural engineer said there had been absolutely nothing wrong, either with the ceiling or wall.

Monday morning they didn’t show up, but sent an e-mail to say that they had other jobs to do and couldn’t start work at my house for another month. So the work that had to be done immediately for fear the wall would collapse could now be put off for a month.

I have emailed Parnell Roofing & Renovations to say that I was within my rights to cancel the (non) contract and get my money back. I have heard nothing from them.

I bought this house 34 years ago as an investment for my future. I am a senior and planning to sell the house in a year or two to provide funds for the rest of my life. But now I have to invest approximately $125,000 to have the underpinning done, as the ‘work’ that had been done couldn’t be undone. They used scare tactics to make me think I was in imminent danger and that I was about to lose everything.

The company seemed legitimate. The website looked professional. Toni Parnell and Connor Brown both have Irish accents. Toni has a tattoo of the name Lorraine on his left arm, which stretches from his elbow to his wrist. ** **** ***** ******* * **********

I asked for a contract for the underpinning job and was told repeatedly it was being written up by the office and would be emailed to me. I never received it.
