Fraudulent Contractor-Remodel Masters/Deacons Contracting/Deacons Renovations
He told us he had a team of guys waiting to start our job including a plumber and electrician, which would help with a lot of the work we needed done. We come to find out later, that his team of workers were guys that he'd hired through Facebook at $20 an hour and his electrician and plumber or contacts he worked with only once before.
We had a fairly large budget which I kept track of on an excel spreadsheet. I shared this with Michael and paid him 50% of each section that they were going to be working on and things started off fairly well.
Demolition went well but after we were a few weeks into the renovation we started hearing things from the workers that we didn't necessarily like. Things like he didn't know what he was doing and they had to tell him how things were to be done because he was installing things incorrectly. That is, when he actually showed up, every time we dropped over to see how things were progressing, he wasn't often here.
We had all of our exterior doors replaced, and I don't think one of them were installed correctly and 2 of them he bought incorrectly and said, oops, I forgot you wanted different ones. Seeing as they were already installed, we had to accept the error. And this is only the tip of the iceberg with the issues and work that had to be redone.
Weeks turned into months and work started to stall. He always had an excuse as to why things were delayed. Most of them were personal problems. We started to notice that when we would give him the next installment, he would show up next week with a new trailer or his van had been wrapped or he was renovating his daughter's bedroom so we started to get more and more suspicious and started to ask more questions of his workers.
This is when we found out that he hadn't been paying his guys. We found out that the kitchen we had paid for him to build was all wrong and he bought the wrong wood. After he was fired, we had to pay again for a whole new kitchen with a new supplier. That was a $20k hit. He hadnt paid the electrician the money we gave him for the job so we had to pay him again as well. That was another $20k hit.
The workers also told us that he was blacklisted at the local home depot and stole from them regularly. And... he'd allegedly been going off and doing drugs with his buddy during the day while his men were here working. That's when he decided to even show up.
Things finally came to a head and my husband and him went toe-to-toe in the driveway until the cops had to be involved. While he was packing up his tools, he managed to take a bunch of supplies that didn't belong to him as he loaded up his trailer.
In the end, he probably took us for about $50k-$60k as a lot of the work he did had to be redone, by a new contractor.
We looked into suing him, but were advised by a lawyer that it probably would cost us more money in the end, as he would just take off change his name again, relocate to somewhere else, and never pay us back.
The only thing we can do now is spread the word so others don't get ripped off by this piece of work.
