Too good to be true
The actual company is based in Denmark, but with no email or phone number to be seen. Impossible to get ahold of and the guy I spoke to claimed to be the only source of contact and was excessively defensive when I confronted him after I had filed the paperwork and provided them my SSN.
If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

when clicking on the plus symbol showing who sent it, before I clicked it showed as Hisense Broadband, once you click it you can see who actually sent it to you, and it came from :[email protected], I posted my resume on Indeed and have submitted to numerous companies, I googled the link I was suppose to click and it came back to a Eric Doan that is listed on linkedin as working for a company called : Winston & Strawn, so not sure if submitted your information to this company is how they are getting your information, but please do your research, check links through google, and never click on suspicious links, than can contain malware, and allow thieves to see your information remotely tracking websites you visit etc
During that time, they had my son on "standby." I believe they do it this way to keep the person from searching out more information. The offer letter came last night on that specific business' letterhead, a bit faded, but there could be many reasons for that, and the email address belonged to their actual head of HR (Ayana Champagne - we looked it up). Hovering over the email didn't show anything strange, no buried email address. That didn't show up until my son responded with all of the identifying information you'd typically submit, along with his signed offer letter. Then we could see that it went to some woman's gmail account, a jamiewright307.
Again, nothing during the process to raise red flags. I work from home for two professional companies, and the hiring process was virtually the same. The salary offered was a little high, but not unreasonably high for someone who just completed a degree in that field. We still didn't feel comfortable, though, and after more research, including this site, decided to freeze his credit and purchase identity protection (since they have his W-9). The steps with the previously posted experience were essentially the same: checked with other committee members, son would need certain equipment and software, they'd send a check for him to use their vendor, etc. My son called the actual company directly this morning, but hasn't yet heard back from their HR. Shortly after that, the spoof company emailed asking questions about banking information, which he obviously didn't give at this point.
A warning to people: This scam looks incredibly legitimate. I'm a middle-aged woman with advanced degrees, and they very nearly got by me, too, because they've clearly streamlined the process to fit right in with the way many companies are doing business during the Covid-19 era. Now, as my son says, not only did he put his information out there, but he still doesn't have a job. Be very cautious out there.
The super sad thing is I went as far as sending my bank info and all the other info your son sent as well. Deposited a check for "equipment & supplies" but I didn't feel comfortable with this or any of the process from start to finish. I haven't taken any of the funds out and today as the check may bounce. I am doing more research into what else I need to do to secure my identity, credit & bank account. Thanks for you guys' input and hopefully nothing serious happens with out credit or otherwise!
