Same operation, new name — Phoenix, August 2026
What happened: A man came to my door in Phoenix. It was over 110 degrees, so I invited him in and we sat and talked for a while. He gave his name as James McKenzie and it was on his badge. Southern, from Alabama, warm and humble, seemed a little slow. Selling magazine subscriptions for points toward community college, with the goal of opening a soul food restaurant around 2028. I bought six 24-month subscriptions for $348 — three for a daycare and three for a nursing home. Paid by Zelle. He called someone to get an order number while I sat there.
About the name. Reports here from 2022, 2023 and 2024 in Georgia and Ohio name the same James McKenzie, but describe him as 20s-30s. Mine read as 50s to me. Same name, same badge, Alabama backstory, same culinary school and soul food restaurant pitch — Since 2021 and three states apart.
I don't know what that means. Either people are guessing ages badly, or it's the same man four years on, or the name and story are being used by more than one rep. Flagging it so others can compare. If you dealt with a "James McKenzie," post the year, the city, and roughly what age he read as.
The phone number is the link. My receipt lists 602-341-7686 — the same number in these reports. I called it. The voicemail greeting identifies it as Elite Alliance Services. Same phone, same Crystal Hall as the Zelle payee. They've rebranded, not disappeared.
The Arizona LLC doesn't exist. The receipt says Exceptional Services & Distribution LLC, 18444 N 25th Ave Suite 420, Phoenix AZ 85023 — and their own preprinted forms misspell it two different ways ("Exceptioal" on the front, "Exceptioal Services & Distribuion" on the cancellation notice). I searched the Arizona Corporation Commission for the correct spelling and both misspellings. Nothing is registered under any of them. The address is a virtual office suite shared by dozens of unrelated businesses.
Other things worth knowing:
He told me it was a tax write-off. It isn't. You're buying a product from a for-profit company, not donating to a 501(c)(3). Their own receipt states they have no affiliation with schools, churches, or non-profits.
All six of my subscriptions were written to the daycare. None to the nursing home, despite that being what we agreed to.
The receipt says "no verbal agreements recognized," which voids everything the rep tells you at your door.
The cancellation notice on the back says refunds within 30 business days. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule requires 10.
First issue not expected for 120 days. That's the buffer — by the time you follow up, the crew is in another state.
The receipt shows an "NFSA Proud Members" logo. That's a trade association, not a regulator or licensing body. It isn't consumer protection and doesn't mean anyone vetted them.
If someone just left your porch: You have until midnight of the third business day to cancel in writing, postmarked. Do it today, certified mail, and keep a copy. Don't wait to see if the magazines arrive — the reports here go back to 2020 and they mostly don't.

I asked him how would I pay and he told me I had to pick out a 2nd magazine. The price went from $59 to $116. I should have known it was a scam then. I said I would pay through Zelle, but I couldn't figure out what to put for first name/last name. He called his boss and the guy said to put Crystal Hall as the first name and Elite Alliance Services, LLC as the last name. I asked who she was and he said she works for the company. If you read some of the other comments here, Crystal Hall responded to several people and denied that this is a scam. After he left, I Googled Elite Alliance Services, LLC Scam. I clicked on ScamPulse and saw all these comments! I was shocked that one of the comments was from 2022. This guy has been around a while. I'm so glad I found out it was a scam early enough to dispute the charge at my bank. I told all my neighbors to do the same. Our homeowners Association sent an email warning people and I posted this story on Nextdoor and also my town's Facebook page. It's not clear if he's a real scammer or if he works for scammers who are taking advantage of him. None the less, it's a crime.

"Door to door person was James McKenzie. We invited him in and he explained that he would get $1000. to help him go to Culinary School if he had enough sales." Like others we wanted to help him out. Would love to know if its legit or not. Have there been any responses to calling the # on the receipts? 602-341-7686?
Scam
Magazine Subscription
My husband and I were very reluctant at first, but we wanted him to succeed, so we signed up. We ended up paying $192.00,
James told us that we could expect our magazines about the end of September or beginning of October.
It is now December 8th.
I tried emailing the address listed and it didn’t send because it’s not an actual email address. I tried calling, but no answer. I’m very frustrated that we fell for this. I’m also so disappointed that we are out of $192.00!
I hope this company gets shut down for scamming people!
Never Received my 3 magazines
The young man acted like he was “slow” and told us he was raising money for Culinary school. He sat down and talked to us for about a half hour. He told us to expect out magazines to start arriving about the end of September. It’s now Dec 8.

I’ve also called and left a voicemail on the phone number listed #602-242-7686.
I can’t believe I fell for this We normally don’t EVER buy anything door to door, but he seemed “special” and very excited about school!
$192.00 we are out! At this point I want my money back and will be very suspicious of everyone.

I was willing to help if magazines went to Senior Homes but after reading Complaints and hearing there was no way to verify, I canceled payment.
Company should be ashamed to give these Sales people a script about going to Culinary School and making people feel sorry for them.
The Price for these Magazines is way above what you could get yourself online.
