Type of a scam Employment
We worked hard and even used Hubstaff so the owner could track our work and see that we were productive. But when payday came, we didn’t hear anything from her. She only messaged us the next day, saying it was a holiday in their country and that our pay would be delayed. She claimed she needed to investigate "irregularities" in our screenshots, even though our bookkeeper had already submitted everything five days before payday. (By the way, we’re only a team of six.)
These so-called irregularities were never clearly explained. Our Operations Manager (OM) asked to schedule a meeting to clarify things, but the owner declined.
A few days later, she suddenly required us to submit a manual timesheet along with screenshots, saying she wouldn’t pay us otherwise. This was odd, considering we were already using Hubstaff, which logs everything and takes automatic screenshots. It felt like she was just making excuses to avoid paying us.
By that point, we all started to suspect we wouldn’t get paid. Still, one of our colleagues complied and submitted the manual timesheet. She even updated our client (the owner) and was asked to do additional tasks in LinkedIn. Meanwhile, our OM tried to speak up for the team, but again, no response.
A week passed after our scheduled payday, and we were still left in the dark. The owner ignored all our follow-ups. The colleague who submitted her timesheet also hadn’t been paid. When she finally got a reply, the owner claimed she “didn’t receive” the timesheet, despite it being clearly sent. The night before that reply, she had removed our access to GHL and Canva, the only tools we used for work.
Of course, this made us furious. We all demanded our pay, but she wouldn't budge. She insisted we wouldn’t get paid unless we submitted the manual timesheets, despite the evidence of our work already being available through Hubstaff.
For context, we created at least three working websites for her, in addition to handling other tasks like podcasts content calendar and all. And we were only allotted 40 hours a month, some even just 20 hours. That’s 10 hours a week, or 2 hours a day. The results of our hard work are clear, yet she still treated us as if we had to prove ourselves.
Also worth noting: the reason she gave for not wanting to pay through Hubstaff is because she thinks it’s a “scam.” So even though another teammate sent her manual timesheets during a heated exchange, the owner again claimed she never received them.
As of now, none of the six of us have received our pay, and we don’t think we ever will.
