Caljobs.ca.gov Reports & Reviews (1)

I found an ad on CalJobs.gov for a data entry position. The pay was listed as $22-$30 per hour. The business name was Joe O Gaytan. I applied using my resume which included my email and phone number. I then got a text message from a "Kevin Spencer" saying "I'm Kevin Spencer form 724 Imports LLC. Your resume was seen on CALJOB online application and we feel you would be an asset performing Online Data Entry (Work From Home position). Reply if interested for the job detail. Starting pay is $35.00/hr. I was a bit suprised at the jump to $35/hr when I went back and checked the original posting. I then googled some terms and found various ScamPulse.com postings on the same scam.

I then googled 724 Imports and found this website https://www.724imports.com/ . The website looks legitimate at first glance; as if the layout and UX design was done professionally. There is a chat feature at the bottom, so I used it. I asked the "agent" if there was a Kevin Spencer working at a Manteca branch, and the agent said "Yes. Kevin Spencer is our recruiting manager." Hmm. I shared a link to the ScamPulse.com scam page to the agent. Their response was "I don't see anything suspicious here".

At this point I'm believing that Kevin Spencer and 724 Imports are plausibly legitimate, but someone is using their likeness to scam me. There is plausibly a Manteca branch, but the only thing still suspect is the name Joe O Gaytan. I proceeded with caution, resonded to the "imposter", "Kevin Spencer" and recieved an email from him stating the following:

It looked weird and too good to be true. The method of contact was impersonal so far. I'll humbly admit, part of me was hoping it was real. If its real, I'm proceeding with caution anyway, if its fake I'm entering the belly of the beast. I was unemployed - so I had time. I politely agreed to an interview via Microsoft Teams, saying I had some questions and verification concerns.

Day 2 - The Interview. "Kevin Spencer" agreed to meet at a time of my convenience. Oddly flexible schedule for a man in a high position. Office Teams has a face-to-face feature, but the interview was done by typing. Odd, although data entry requires typing skills - perhaps the proof of my ability is justified. I treated it as if it were real. The individual I spoke to asked very typical job interview questions. He was fluent in English and used proper grammar. It lasted over an hour and a half - also odd. Eventually they asked if I was hired, would I prefer mailed checks or direct deposit. Inappropriate. The "interview" ended politely, and I was told to expect to be contacted the next day about a final decision.

I went back to 724 Imports website again. It's all fake. They either purchased a once active domain and edited some content, or built it all themselves. There is no feature for a prospective customer to browse their services, unless you count the contact field or chat feature. 3/5ths of the testomonials have to do with how great it is to work there. The background image is of New York City, and they claim to be based in L.A. There is a section of the copy using Times New Roman font as well. Its not the year 2000.

I contacted my local CalJobs.gov affiliate and told them everything. They're currently looking into it, although the name Joe O Gaytan still remains on the home page as one of the top jobs applied for. There is a Facebook profile for a Joe O Gaytan listed as living in Manteca, listed as 70 years old, with minimal content. Perhaps the profile is real, and this man is a victim. Perhaps its a feeble decoy using someone else's face. Perhaps the scammer is dumb enough to use their own page.
