I am writing on behalf of my elderly grandmother, who has dementia. I was not present when the scam occurred, I’m just relaying what my grandmother told me. She said a woman called her at home claiming to be a representative from Medicare. The woman said she was calling in regard to my grandmother’s back and wrist pain. My grandmother has not had any wrist or back pain, so she was immediately confused. The woman claimed my grandmother was about to lose a Medicare benefit unless she ordered a back brace and a wrist brace. The woman asked for my grandmother’s personal information, but did not ask for payment. Then, a week later, my grandmother received a package with a back and wrist brace inside. It appeared to have been billed to Medicare. I Googled the company and immediately the BBB’s Direct Medical Equipment scam alert popped up. I also noticed the suspicious company that sent my grandmother unneeded medical supplies is listed as headquartered in Florida, yet the documents they sent list Missouri as their location. Also, the company is using an Outlook.com email address, and no website listed. So I’m very suspicious my grandmother got scammed. It doesn’t appear that she was defrauded or robbed of money. But it appears that Medicare is being scammed using her personal information.
