Yesterday (March 24, 2020) I was searching online about Brother printer issue (my laptop couldn’t find my printer even though both were connected to on same home WiFi network. Then a chat box popped up and asked me about what problem I was having. I shared my trouble and the chat person asked my phone number and email. I gave my number and email. The chat person said someone would call me to help resolve the issue.

Someone, a heavily accented guy who sounded like an Indian, caliled me within a minute. He asked me to run a few things (including printer, config and msinfo32), and then he asked for control of my computer which I gave, and he began to ping 8.8.8.8 -t. After many minutes, at the very end of my screen I saw a line beside the c:\> prompt that said “Network encryption is corrupt”. He said that a specialist from American Software Tech LLC will take over to help me fix the corruption issue. The control over my computer was transfer online over to the technician from AST.

The technician’s name was Alex, who sounded soft but also with a mild Indian accent. He did the pinging (8.8.8.8 -t) again, and did a few things. He was able to establish connection with my printer. But when he tried to print a test page, he couldn’t as one of the ink cartridges of my printer was out of ink. That was when I began to feel fishy about the whole “network encryption is corrupt” thing. I decided to end the live session with Alex and went to buy new ink cartridge. But then the store was closed. Alex called me couple of times and I told him that I didn’t get new ink cartridge due to store closure.

This morning I went out to buy new ink cartridge again and I got one. I installed new ink cartridge in my printer and bingo, my computer was able to print a test page on the printer.

Come back to think of it, the line “Network encryption is corrupt” was typed in by the heavily accented Indian; it was not the result of the scan that he did. It was also evident from the fact that the words remained beside the c:\> prompt. If the words were the result of the scan he did, they wouldn’t be beside the command prompt (as some of the results of the scan were shown in the attached screen shots). The command prompt should empty waiting for next input.

Alex tried to call me twice this morning but I didn’t answer. Yesterday the heavily accented Indian said that the service to fix the “Network encryption is corrupt” issue would cost $200.
