Type of a scam Employment

My wife was searching on ziprecruiter.com for a job and came across a personal assistant position for Aldi. She applied, and was contacted by a man named Ronald Gatehouse, who asked her for her address and current work, and explained some of the duties of the position. Then, without even an interview, he contacted her and said that she had the job. He said that they would be sending her money for purchasing the software to work from home, and that she was to await further instructions. The way that he worded it sounded very suspicious though, as he said "watch for my emails and reply promptly, even if it is only a word or two. If you do not, I will feel ignored." Today, the check came in the mail for $4,850.21, but the company on the check is "*** ***. 23140 Miles Rd, Cleveland OH 44128." Even more strange than this, the name on the envelope is *** *** with a return address of 12 Diane Ct, Jasper IN 47546.

I looked up the *** Corp online, and there is no website for that company, but one search entry had a website listed for *** Corp that took me to the website for Tucson *** and Appliance store in Tucson Arizona. I also looked up the return address on the envelope, and it does not exist (according to gmaps). All of this does not sound legitimate. What should we do with this check for $4,850.21? And how do we know if we are being scammed?

My wife did not give out our bank account number or her social security number at any time.
