Someone contacted me by calling from my bank’s actual phone number. They then texted from a different phone number stating it was Virginia Credit Union asking if I attempted an amount of money at a rental car location. The person called back from vacu’s number and confirmed my personal information with me, making me feel as if this was a legitimate call. He asked if I share my card info with anyone and he stated he would deactivate my card but first he’d have to send me a one time code. He sent the code and I gave it to him right away since I was in a panic without reading it. He then asked for my pin to stop my card and to confirm the amount in my account so he could make sure nothing else comes out of my account. Later I went back and read the one time code text and it was for Apple Pay. I checked my account again to make sure nothing came out and I started seeing charges in the same amount, minutes apart charging my card. I called the same number back that the guy called me on and it’s definitely vacu’s number! I was able to talk to an actual representative and he told me he didn’t see anything noted on my account, no record of me talking to anyone and my card had not been deactivated! The real representative then deactivated my card and vacu is doing an investigation but how was someone able to duplicate a “secure” bank’s phone number and impersonate them? If I hadn’t checked my account when I did, that scammer would’ve wiped my account out!
