My fiancé and I were looking at apartments to move in together. We found a place in area of my City that I was familiar with. The rent posted on Zillow was really affordable. I sent the deposit to hold the place, and the person I spoke with and had talked to over the phone said the payment could be done through Zelle. This was my first time apartment hunting and I didn’t know if that is usually standard procedure. The listing was too good to be true, but we were willing to take a chance as it would be our first home. We happened to be in the area passing by and thought it would be a good idea to just look around. At the time I wasn’t able to sent the full $1,300 for the holding deposit since Zelle has a limit of $500 to be sent per day for new recipients. Before I sent the rest of the money we happened to stop by the apartment. My fiancé spoke to one of the tenants and the listing description did not match the apartments available at all. The pictures showed that the apartment had a split ac unit above the door and none of them had it. We were looking to apply for a one bedroom and all of the apartments were 2 bedrooms. The manager on site had a different name. When my fiancé came back to tell me this I gave him the number of the lady I had spoken to & he spoke to the “husband.” Basically he told us that we were out of luck and started to yell profanities at us. It was extremely upsetting to us to say the least. All email exchanged matched, phone numbers matched. The first red flag was that the last name on the Zelle recipient was slightly different , but I could send the money using the email too.

Looking for apartment came across website that had some availability in my area. Sent application fee... they sent me a email to click link to schedule to view apartment.... pick 3 option ...day of viewing got another email not available at time of viewing. Tried to reschedule couldnt pick 3 option or go any further. Sent email explaining what hapoen and called. Phone number no longer in service and emails stop after receiving application fee.
