Caller (identified himself as Martel Moore) advised I was the Oregon winner in Publisher's Clearinghouse. Told me he needed to hang up and call me back in 9 seconds, which he did. Caller again advised I was Oregon winner. Asked me how I felt about that. I was skeptical and told him so. Asked how I could win when I did not enter. Caller gave me 4 scenarios for how I could be entered. Two of them were plausible, the other two were not. Caller gave me package code # and coupon winning #. Advised not only did I win $3.5 million, but also a bonus prize of a 2017 GMC Denali and 1 year insurance through Allstate and asked what color car I wanted. Reassured me this was not a scam. Asked if I wanted to be on TV, in the NY Times or a confidential delivery. I told him confidential delivery. Caller set time for Prize Patrol to be at my home for 3pm that day. I told him I would not be home and asked for 8pm delivery. Caller agreed. Gave me the names of manager (Dave Sayer), driver (Susan White) and PCH CEO (Andrew Goldbuge) who would be there to present me with my prize. (I later checked PCH website and learned that the CEO is Andrew Goldberg. Caller spelled the names for me). Caller said I needed to go to Walmart and make a purchase in order to have a barcode to present when my check was delivered. I told him I was not going to do that (it is a 30 mile trip to the nearest Walmart). Caller did have an accent (India/Pakistan??), was calm in his demeanor, never pressured me, did not ask for any banking info or my SSN. He had my name, my husband's name, our address and of course our phone number. When I told him I wasn't going to go to Walmart I also said that I had spent enough time with him, if it was a scam I've wasted my time, if it was not I would see him at 8:00 and I hung up.

I was contacted by a Mr. Leo Johnson. He stated that I had won 2.5 million dollars, plus $7,000 a week for Life in the Publisher's clearing House Contest. I was told that I would have to pay $387.99 to register the prize check. He said that the check had to be registered in order for me to cash it, because it was coming from another state. He said that I needed to send the money by Western Union immediately. He became upset when I told him I couldn't send the money. At this point I hung the phone up. The phone number was 1-876-503-2767.

Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

I received a call today from a man named William Anderson, who claimed to be from the Publisher's Clearing House. The number was 409-213-6512, from Port Arthur, Texas. He told me that I was the winner in Springfield, and that they pick a random winner in the area who has entered the sweepstakes. I have entered the sweepstakes before, so this is why I didn't immediately think that this was a scam. I was told that I won $35,000,000 and a 2017 Mercedes Benz. He gave me a lot of convincing information, such as a claim number, a 6 digit confirmation code, a prize ID, and said he had clearance from the ScamPulse.com. He asked for my name and address, and said that "the crew" would be at my house in a half hour with my check and my new Mercedes. He then told me that I needed to go to either a Walmart or Home Depot and pay $699 at the Western Union for "taxes and fees" before the crew arrived at my home. This was the first red flag, and the next was when he asked me what color I wanted my car to be. I realized that they couldn't just get any color that I wanted in only a half hour. I then began to ask him questions about why he needed me to go to Western Union and also why he would ask me what color I wanted the car to be if they were already on their way to my house. I told him that I would be calling the ScamPulse.com to check up on all of this and he told me that I didn't need to do that and that he will just pick another winner if I wasn't being cooperative. Eventually, he did hang up the phone on me.

Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

A legitimate looking letter arrived in the mail saying we had won the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. Enclosed was a check for $6780 to cover legal fees for the prize of $2.5 million written on a Chase bank check. The local bank accepted and deposited said check and gave a $200 advance on the money with a 10 business day hold. Called after 10 days, the bank reported it was counterfit. The persons from PCH called saying we were splitting the amount with 3 others so they cancelled the check...Now a Michael Roberts with phone number 818-600-1929 is calling saying the amount is $750,00 and to cover taxes we must deposit $1850 in a Bank of America account. He mentioned IRS and Customs to bring the cash and ScamPulse.com accreditation and the $1850 was according to FBI. Don't tell anyone until after you received the winnings!

Consumer contacted the BBB regarding multiple phone calls of two men claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House with a sweepstakes prize. One claimed to be a delivery man and the other just an employee requesting personal information such as a Drivers Lic # and full name to confirm her delivery and prize. They then requested she send a Western Union moneygram of $285000 to a Mr. Patrick Swift at 129 Main Plaza, St George, UT so that this man could pay the IRS. The original man, Mike Moore, called multiple times for personal information using the number 615-900-2170 and referred to another individual named "Peterson." The scammers also insisted they were on "good terms" with the BBB, Dept of the Treasury, and IRS, but could provide no more information when the consumer questioned.
