The scammer pretends to be the Ohio Valley Eye Institute offering a remote data entry job. They have you fill out a form to order equipment that the business will pay for. In the confirmation email you are told that two items are out of stock until late next month (in my case, a MacBook Pro and an automated time tracker). The person you are communicating with (who has moved from email to Microsoft Teams) will apologize and propose resolving the issue by issuing you a check to cash and having you purchase the unavailable items yourself. I told them I was uncomfortable doing so as I am aware of faulty check scams, and asked for an alternative. They said there was no other way and when I pushed back again saying that I am being cautious of scams, all of their messages were deleted and they blocked me and ceased all contact.
