I responded to an apartment posted on Craigslist, and a person identifying themselves as Douglas Michael contacted me. Douglas sent a short list of screener questions (seemed reasonable to me), and I responded with my answers. Soon after, I was informed by Douglas that my application was approved and that I should send a front/back image of my drivers license to reserve the apartment (I did not send this). Reservation of the apartment would cost 1 months rent ($2,200) plus a security deposit ($1,100), but the unit could not be viewed for several weeks (he said a tenant still lives there). Upon my request, Douglas sent his CA real estate license number, which does seem to match a person named Douglas Michael according to the DRE public license lookup. However, the website for the leasing company he claims to be affiliated with is sketchy (Ocean Front Property). The main webpage (oceanfrontprops.com) has lots of typos, and there is no mention of properties in San Francisco anywhere on the site. Overall, what convinced me that this is a scam was that the "leasing agent" asked for money before any opportunity to view the apartment and that the leasing company website seems to be a poorly made fake.
