The New Education Relief "department" reached out to me about the my application for debt forgiveness under the new SAVE plan. They new my specific FSA loan balance and quoted me the remainder I would he respinsible for after the majority of debt was "forgiven". After 3 150+ payments id be responsible for $25 a month for aprox. 32 months. Six mo thhs into the progran after over 400 had beb removed, they had requested my FSA password and username, I began to notice irregularities in their communications. I looked up the number and saw several people having the same experience i was- their debt never changed, only increased as interest began accuring. The company wanted to handle everything through your respresentative who had a reasonable answer for eevverryy inconsistency. Eventually, I told them I found this to be a fradulent compmay and would be reporting them. They began to get belligerent with calls from various numbers. Several people reached out to attest it was a legitamate service. And fortunately for me i was able to cancel the card and had no other suspicious activity in the account, several other stories had hundreds taken after the initial payments and monthly payments proved to be successful.

My brother recently had a medical emergency and is in a nursing facility because he now cannot use his hands (he already couldn't use his legs). Medicaid long-term program will use his SSDI to pay his room & board and leave him with only $74/mo so he needs to cancel any payments beyond that amount. He named me his power of attorney to handle these legal and financial matters. When I asked him for a list of his bills, he was surprised to see a monthly $19 payment to New Education Relief because he had previously had his student loans forgiven.

I googled New Education Relief (NER) and the only result is their website, which only lists a phone number and email address and has no other information or web pages about their services, staff. (Weird). At the bottom of the webpage in small print is information about them being a nonprofit that “for a fee” assists people with student loan consolidation or refinancing. It looked shady so I looked up the business on the Better Business Bureau, Charity Navigator, Candid 990 Finder, ProPublica, and Cause IQ - none of them had a record of a nonprofit by this name. (Weird.) I called the number on their website and it never rang or played hold music; I just heard silence for like 20 seconds so I hung up and tried again with the same result. (Weird.) A few moments later, I received a call from an 855 number. The person identified themselves as an NER representative and simply said that they missed a call from this number and asked how they could help me. (Weird.)

The woman was able to look up Aric’s account with only his first name (no last name, birthdate, account number, or SSN). (Weird.)

I explained Aric’s situation and asked how I could be added as an authorized user to make changes on his account. I suggested they might have a form for me to complete, need Aric’s verbal approval, or want me to upload or email the DPOA. She put me on hold to transfer me to Aric’s “assigned account processor” but came back in a minute saying they were on another call and would need to call me back later. I suggested that she should be able to help me with this and she tried to rush me off the phone. (Weird.) I asked for the nonprofit’s Employer Identification Number (IRS tax ID number) and she was unable to provide it. She said someone else would need to call me back and rushed off the phone. (Weird.) I am calling my brother's bank to stop future payments to New Education Relief and am reporting it here to hopefully save other people from becoming victims. I have no idea yet how long my brother has been paying this bill but it could be many years.
