Master Cleaning LLC Reports & Reviews (1)

- Norfolk, VA, USA

I would like to share information about a company that is scamming clients out of money: Master Cleaning (http://www.mastercleaning.org/). Like many others, I contacted this company based on a ValPak advertisement where among many deals, carpet cleaning for 2 rooms was advertised as costing $49.99. The price was even advertised on their website at the time, but not honored once the technicians arrived. After seeing the coupon, I called the company, confirmed the price, and scheduled an appointment on my move-out day. I selected this company based on the price and booked in advance; I would’ve selected a different company if they had been transparent about the price upfront.

When the technician arrived, he stated that the price would be upwards of $400 because of my floor location (I provided my apartment number and the company had done work at our building prior, so they were aware I was not on the 1st floor), but I was told I would be charged to cancel. Due to the fact that this was my last day in the apartment and no other company could provide service at the last minute (again, I made sure to book in advance to avoid this type of issue), I was forced to use this company or forfeit my security deposit. I eventually haggled down to $300, which was $250 more than my original quote. This occurred in June 2020, and I’ve yet to hear back from management. I feel purposely overcharging customers is extremely unethical in the midst of a pandemic when money is already tight for many. A copy of my receipt and links to pictures of the coupon can be provided upon request.

After reading the company’s Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/biz/master-cleaning-virginia-beach) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pg/MastercleaningVA/reviews/?ref=page_internal) reviews, I realized this is a common practice for the business. They quote a low price, threaten a cancellation fee, then charge customers astronomically upon arrival based on inconsistent attributes, especially when customers’ hands are tied due to move-outs and other time constraints. In comparison to Yelp and Facebook where many users have a digital footprint along with their reviews, their Google reviews are misleading as the highest reviews are from people with few reviews that were likely incentivized or from fake Google accounts. The 1 and 2 star reviews are very telling.

This company is extremely unethical and needs to be stopped. Being swindled out of $250 is problematic for numerous reasons, and like others have stated, when I attempted to rectify the situation with management, I never received a response. Please look into this company to see if you are able to stop others from being scammed by Master Cleaning.

As an aside, this falls under both fraudulent advertising (misleading price on the advertisement and quoted by the company) and a scam (I was threatened to be charged for cancellation if they did not do the service), so I was not sure which category I should report the incident under.

Note from BBB: Please contact the Virginia Attorney General's office to file a complaint against this business.  Also this company has an F rating with the BBB.
