I Googled recipes and clicked on the first one. Immediately on my screen was a starburst saying WARNING, and a very loud noise came through my laptop. The screen said it was a result of a scammer trying to get to my computer, but don't worry b/c i called the phone number on my screen. The message was that they were subcontractors for Microsoft, and would help me safeguard my system. I believed them, especially since the screaming noise ended. I spent 2 hours with them as they copied info off my system. The pages flashed by quickly, but i took some photos of what they took. They assured me I would be ok. Then they presented me with prices for protection, starting at $399. The five-year $2196 seemed the best option, so i took it. They told me to write a check, and to put it on my printer. Then they controlled my wifi; i watched my printer scan the check as they took it. They said they can "protect" everything I have that's on WiFi, don't worry. They can access and protect my phone/laptop/printer/tv. They were very nice, and their "contract" seemed legit--even warning against other scams! I later called my bank to say stop payment, b/c I wasn't feeling good about this. Bank said, don't worry, we have 24/7 fraud department (it really was my bank). I trusted that I'd be ok. But I mentioned it to a friend, and he said I was scammed. He told me to have my pc wiped by a very reputable computer firm in town; and they did that. They made my pc look as though it were new, out of the box, nothing on it but Windows 11. Later i found out more and this company is very very well known and relied on. I changed my bank accounts, all my autopays, and my credit card--it took me days to change all my passwords. The scammers kept leaving me voicemails that I ignored. The last one warned they were sending me to collections, b/c the bank didn't honor my check (I'd also submitted a local police report; that, plus my recorded conversation with the bank, in which they said not to worry, they have 24/7 fraud protection) helped me get my money back. [the bank told me it's impossible to find fraud--they process millions of payments every day]). Today i see in the mail that they're sending me what is likely a threatening letter. I won't sign for it, if thats required for receipt. Everything i see online about Global Bytes IT (or IP) Solutions points to its being a fraud. Even Microsoft's website says it's a fraud--MS uses no contractors, and you cannot phone MS and that it's a scam if a company claims to be subcontractor. I'm lucky: I got my money back. But that's rare, i understand.

On November 6, 2023, my HP laptop froze and displayed a message to not do anything, but to call 1-800-440-1091. I called; phone was answered by heavily accented Middle Eastern by the name of "David Sherwood". After diagnosing, he opened a text box and typed a list that I needed 5 issued repaired. In order for him to "fix" my issues, it required that I pay $299.99 to fix and suggested that I also purchase a 5 year/monthly service protection plan at a cost of an additional $250.00, plus taxes and tech fees. He required that I pay by check (made out to "Techmax IT Solutions") and to scan it to be converted to an E-check. So, after the initial service to 'clean' my laptop, I have now had 2 service 'cleanings'. Each time I call, a Middle Eastern person answers with an American name - 'Jim Thomas' and 'Karen'. Even though I paid and have had these 2 'cleanings', I am VERY skeptical as to the validity of this company. I would love to get some official word that this company is legit.

I logged into my Facebook account to check my business page and accidentally clicked on a link that said I had 2 unread messages and my screen froze with a pop up saying windows defender locked my computer and that someone tried using my ip address to access accounts for illegal activity. In the pop up it read threat detected: Trojan spyware. At the bottom it read a phone number to call. So I called and the person on the other end named Mike Mendez needed access to my computer to fix it. He showed me a bunch of files that were supposedly on my computer and foreign ip addresses connecting to my brand new starlink router I have had for less than a month and showed me that all my major windows functions were stopped which lets others get into a persons computer. Then told me it would cost a one time fee of $299 to fix it or I could buy ip and spyware protection from their other department. He said to send a check. I said I use a debit card and he said he would have to secure my computer so I could pay via debit card and didn’t offer the price for the security software. Now someone I don’t know is in my personal computer and connected to my home internet connection.

Mom was online searching appetizer recipes, the screen froze and had flashing warning about a virus attack with a phone number to call. A robotic womans voice was saying do not reset the computer or shut down it will cause the virus to attack. Phone number provided to call was 1-888-440-1091. She was notified that the firewall was corrupted and that there were multiple attacks on our network and that they would have to reinstall firewall security. They stated the company was called GlobalBytes IP Solutions and they would help fix the problem for $399.99 and asked for her bank information. She said no I'll pay with credit card at which time she was told no just give us a check, if you use credit card scammers can get your information since you don't have security.

They then remotely accessed her computer and had codes and numbers flashing on her screen like work was being completed. Prior to me getting home, she had spoken with 2 technicians named John Battam and Paul Harris. When I got home, I was told that mom was on the phone with this company and had been on for a significant amount of time. It didn't sound right to me that they would be on the long.

She had him on speaker, his name was John and had an Indian accent. Come to find out later she wrote his name down and he called himself John Battam. I mentioned that she should hang up and go to the apple store or the geek squad, my mom told him please stop what you are doing I am going to take it to apple to which he replied, apple will fix the problem they won't install or fix your firewall. He then mentioned he was done running the diagnostics and she was being transferred to his Supervisor Alex Wilson. Mom inquired about Paul Harris, the individual she started the conversation with and was told that he was busy helping other customers.

I need to go they are telling me to hang up and Alex then proceeded to get very angry to the point of yelling and say you can't stop now we already started the work, who is telling you to get off, she told them she had to go and hung up. she immediately got a call back from 786)217-0982 and it was John saying what happened I think we got disconnected. My mom said I can't talk and hung up. I immediately blocked the number. We only got the 1 follow up call.

Summary: No money was sent. Remote access was given so 2 passwords were seen. Individuals spoken to during this ordeal: John Battam, Paul Harris, Alex Wilson. Company was GLOBALBYTES IP SOLUTIONS, address given: 302 80202 St Mall Suite 1320 Denver, CO

Alex got very belligerent when the information was no longer free flowing, and we were not playing the game. 1 follow up call received from a Florida phone number 786-217-0982.
