Citibank Imposter - Phishing Scam Reports & Reviews (5)

Dear Team ,

I am a 78-year-old woman and would like to report a scam so that others do not become victims. Last Wednesday, I experienced an issue with my bank account and searched Google for a customer support number. I found 888-434-8681 and believed it was an official Citi Bank or TotalAV support number.

When I called, the person instructed me to go to my bank and stand in front of it. They then asked for my bank account number, claiming they needed to verify my account and resolve the issue. Trusting them, I provided the requested information. Shortly afterward, I noticed unauthorized activity involving my account. The caller then claimed the problem could only be fixed if I paid $999, so I paid using my credit card because I believed they were legitimate.

Later, I told my daughter what had happened. She searched the phone number online and discovered it had been reported as being associated with scammers. I realized that I had been deceived by someone impersonating a trusted company.

I respectfully request that the FCC investigate the phone number 888-434-8681 and take appropriate action to prevent others, especially senior citizens, from becoming victims of similar scams. I hope my report helps protect the public from this type of fraud.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Ava Allen

Received call/voicemail from caller ID 330-300-8624 stating they were calling from City Financial and requesting I call back at the caller id number or 877-245-7020 to speak to a representative. When either of those numbers is called, the call can't be completed.

Credit monitoring suspicious activity on credit card. Don't have account with them. Reference Number:1049

I received a fraud alert via email that said, "we need to speak to you" and that I may not be able to make purchases on my card until I contacted the company. I used the number provided in the email and was transferred to what sounded like a customer service center for Citi Bank. I was asked to provide a phone number for verification and then told that my phone number could not be used and asked for an alternative contact number (which I don't have) - they then asked if I had other accounts with Citi, I said yes, and they asked for my FULL credit card number! When I said I wasn't going to do that I was told I needed to provide a method of verification for my account before I could lock the card or dispute the charge. I dropped the call and called back - had the same experience (rejected my phone number and asked that I give a full credit card number in order to proceed). The original email looked legitimate, but the customer service reps (multiple) gave me suspicions of scam or phishing behavior. Both reps told me a card had been added to an Apple Pay account associated with an authorized user. When I reviewed my account, there was a charge of $5300 to Neiman Marcus.

Person called pretending to be the fraud group at Citi from a number that looks like it is Citi's. Said that there were two charges that I denied and they would remove the charges and sign me up for text messages so I get the alerts easier. They asked me to verify if I had the card in my possession or if I needed a new card. I said I had the card and they asked me to verify the expiration data and last 8 on my card, which I did. They then asked for the CVV which I found suspicious and looked online to see if I had any fraudulent pending charges. I did not, I stated that and they said it was because the charges were made from out of state. I said OK and gave them a fake CVV and they then asked for my birthday and I hung up. They called back about 8 more times and I eventually blocked the number.
