Check scam

Th scammer contacted us May 4, 2024 via text from one phone number and using the name Jonathan. He said he needed 4 doors installed and how much would it be for labor. My boyfriend said $450 for 4 doors. Jonathan said he would send a check and then once that cleared we could start the job. This situation is not fishy at all as customer send money ahead of time. He did not provide any other information to us at this time. The on 05/07/24 Jonathan texted from a new phone number again sending mt boyfriend the tracking information for the certified check. We received the check and it was for quadruple the amount $3,950.00. The check was from North West Michigan College. We are waiting for a reply from this scammer.

Th scammer contacted our company is January 2024 via text from one phone number and using the name Jonathan. He said he needed 5# fans installed and how much would it be for labor and he was told via text we do not do blind bids meaning our company will come do a free walk through t generate and estimate. He then never contacted again until 4/9/24 from a new phone number using the name Jonathan and saying he had 4# fans to install and uninstall 4# fans. The owner contacted Jonathan via text and gave him a price for labor as Jonathan asked for of $750.00 and Jonathan said he would send a check and then once that cleared we could start the job. This situation is not fishy at all as customer send money ahead of time. He did not provide any other information to us at this time. The on 4/14/24 Jonathan texted from a new phone number again sending our company the tracking information for the certified check. We received the check and it was for quadruple the amount $3,950.00 and was very admit about cashing it. Internally in out company this was a red flag and we did some investigating while stringing Jonathan along. We found out that the address he had given was a home for sale locally and we contacted the realtor and by no way did this person have any affiliation with the home address he provided. He also took forever to give us his last name, email address. He seemed to get impatient and instructed us to kindly deposit the check in out bank and provide him with a deposit receipt. We also contacted the bank on the check and reported this as 100% fraud and they said they would file the report. There is a different company on the check, a different mailing address, and a different retune address as well. We also believe he uses several phones and slipped up with us. Since we knew it was a scam we kept in contact as we deposited the check which we did not to buy us time to report this to the proper authorities. As we told him the check cleared and Jonathan replied that we need to send the balance to the suppliers so they can get and deliver the materials to the job site. Which is funny as Jonathan already told me days prior on 4/10/24 that he had already purchased the fans for installation. We also are texting that the amount for deposit of the check is for $750.00 total which we quoted him for labor and he is responding that he sent a check for $3,950.00. At this time our office personnel has told Jonathan they will look into this situation and be in contact with him on 4/24/24 after 11am. We were trying to string him along to see where he is located as we believe he is trying to steal money from the company he put on the check and use our small company as a mule to send hime the money and we know what will happen. We would like to send the shipping flatmate envelop and fraudulent check to someone for investigation.
