I received an email from a person pretending to be the HR Director of Atlanta United FC Club, saying they had seen my portfolio in Behance—an online portfolio website for illustrators and designers. After the initial approach, they asked me to go through a text interview via Microsoft Teams. Then, they let me know I had been approved for a remote Illustrator position and sent me a contract which looked legit. I signed it and uploaded a snapshot of my driver's license. I asked to talk to someone on the phone but they said that was going to happen after going through with some online training. I became suspicious when they sent me a PDF with a check for equipment that I was supposed to deposit to my bank via mobile banking. I did not deposit the check and realized it was a scam when I asked ChatGPT which read the contract and caught many red flags.
