I listed my car on craigslist and was contacted via text and asked to get a VIN report on vinautochecks.com. I looked online and saw it was a possible scam. I told the scammer that I would run a report from a site I had heard of (like carfax) and he insisted that it had to be that website and only that website. He was very convincing that he was a legitimate buyer.

I listed my vehicle on Kijiji. Since they had my cell number he (Steve) sent me a text. Asking if it was still for sale, how long I owned it. He sent another email asking when we could meet saying he was at work but would need to take a day off to come see the vehicle. He said he could make a deal on the spot with cash, certified check or would go to the bank. We made arrangements for a time. He then wanted a VA report. I asked what that was and he said a vin report and to get it from vinautochecks.com. I went to Carfax and got a free one and sent it to him. He said that in order to purchase the vehicle he needed it from this specific website. I did some research and saw it could be a possible scam. I wrote him back and said that and that if he wanted to see the vehicle he could do so. He wrote back an angry text which started in English switched to a different language then back to English. At that point I blocked the number and reported it as spam on my phone. This deleted the text so I am unable to share it.

I just listed my car for sale on Facebook Marketplace and KSL.com. I've had 3 different texts in 2 days that all start out the same- very similar language. First they always ask if there are mechanical issues. After 2 or 3 texts they claim interest and/or "cash in hand". Then they all eventually insist that you provide them with a vehicle report and give a link to vinautocheck.com. or statevincheck.com. We have a friend that owns a car lot and pulled an Experian Auto Check for us. The scammers phones won't let me send pics of that report and they say it has to be vinautochecks.com, and keep telling me it's easy and to just go there and do it. I do not believe they are ligit buyers and are only trying to get me to pay for their services. One even got very rude saying, "Do you think I'm playing around here? I have cash in hand."

They have my car VIN now.
