TAT SOFTWARE SCAM

Was using computer when pop up box appeared on screen saying there was a security alert & that computer was locked. Phone #877-208-9093 was provided for assistance. Spoke with someone named David Miller that said he was with Secure Works. He obtained access to my computer & stated that it had been hacked by foreign hackers he offered a fix from TAT Software for $99.95 he also offered a second option of a fix with 1 year protection for $199.95. Please beware these people are slick they had an answer for every concern I raised. I received a text fraud alert from my bank & advised David of it. David said that was the banks standard procedure. I have handled this with my bank. I thought I was smarter than this but my computer was locked & they were slick. I googled afterwards and there were instructions on how to get past their “security “ alert provided. He gave me another phone #844-919-1039 and advised me not to call the original number if I needed anything further assistance. He also gave me his phone number of 412-547-9604. After all of this the good news is that my computer was unlocked.

My 81-year old father who resides in Maryland got a flashing pop-up message "from Microsoft" saying that he had a virus on his computer and to call this number. The number was for TAT Software - not Microsoft - though my father thought he was communicating with Microsoft. They then asked to take over his computer, which he naively allowed, and someone from this company installed software on his computer. I find this to be reprehensible, unethical and predatory. My father did not seek out TAT Software - he was fed a scary looking ad and followed it. Is the limit for petty crime in the State of California $100? Because they charged him $99.95. My mother was concerned and called me, and I instructed them to call their credit card, cancel the card and refuse the charge. We did this so quickly that I am hopeful we mitigated any potential harm. The fact that their M.O. is to gain access to someone's computer using scare tactics is extremely unsettling to me. Who knows what software they actually put on there or what data they were able to pull.
