- Hinckley, OH, USA

received phone message for half price service of spectrum internet for 3 years if 1 year paid up front using Target gift cards as payment. Did not follow through but a charge of $300 was posted to my credit card(now cancelled) which they already had as a cancellation fee from the discount offer program. The $300 did show up as a credit on my Spectrum account and is currently in limbo at Spectrum with no clear refund information from them while they investigate. The credit card company says I will have to pay the $300 processed to Spectrum as it was paid to Spectrum. Scammers appear to have a "spoofed account" allowing them to post charges as Spectrum.

Said I was eligible for 50% of my current bill. He told me to go and buy a Target gift card then call them back. I hung up. Unfortunately, I was busy and didn’t realize it was a scam until I gave them my account number. He was able to see how much I was paying per month. I called Spectrum to notify them and changed my security code.

I was contacted via cell phone from Michael Taylor on Aug 28 and he said I'm from Spectrum and do you want to reduce your cable bill? He had the last 4 digits of my credit card so I thought is was authentic. He stated I can take $30 a month off your monthly bill. I gave him my entire credit card number. I contacted Spectrum and they stated they had not received payment.

Woman identified herself as Mary Hill (employee No. 1010, phone 855-519-1920; tho she was calling from a local number), tho her accent was thick and she obviously wasn't "Mary Hill". The background was noisy, like a call center. She had my name, current address and phone no., as listed on my Spectrum bill, and seemed to know that I was subscribing only to their internet plan. I was offered two $20 monthly discounts (one was supposedly a senior discount). I provided my birthday (I was stupid not to give a fake one) and current Spectrum security code. When she said I needed to pay $7.99 up front to receive the monthly discounts, and asked for a credit card no., I knew it was a scam and hung up. I called Spectrum myself and immediately changed my security code and internet account password.

They called and offered me a discount on my Spectrum account. The lady would not give me her name but wanted me to give her my credit card information.  I want others to be aware of this and I feel she is specifically targeting seniors and offering false discounts for monthly services with Spectrum.

I answered a call on my home phone. Caller said he was with Spectrum. My caller ID showed Chagrin Falls 440-248-8574. I have Spectrum. Wanted to know if I wanted to lower my cable bill. I said yes it went up to about $67. He kept asking questions. I answered yes to one of his questions. I thought I should not have done that and hung up. I called the number back twice. No longer a working number. Normally I don't answer.

I received a call from someone claiming to be a Spectrum sales rep. They said they could get my bill lowered to $99.00. They asked me for my age and my address. They asked for my SSN but I was not comfortable with that, they asked for the last 4 numbers which I gave them. They told me a new box would be sent to me but I never received it. I called Spectrum and they said they were not aware of this.

I received a phone call from Spectrum. The caller stated I was eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program through the Government. I question this being offered through the Government. They did not want money or personal information. . It is for Seniors. How do they know I am a Senior. I also received a mailing regarding this. I do not have their phone number. I question this.

Someone from spectrum contacted me to see if I wanted to switch from AT&T to spectrum. They said I could get 24 months of internet for $12 a month. I gave him all my information including my debit card number. I had a appointment with them today and when I called to verify Spectrum said they never called me or set up a appointment. It was a scam.

I got a call from someone saying they had a promotion for Spectrum for seniors. They asked me questions like the first 5 of my SSN and a few other things, They asked for my credit card info, they needed to take $5.00. I told them I was going to call Spectrum and they told me Spectrum doesn't know about the promotions. They then asked me for the last 4 of my SSN. I didn't give it to him. He said they would call back in 10 minutes but when they called I didn't answer. I later checked and they tried using $60.00 from my credit card at UPS but it was denied because I advised the credit bureaus.

I received a phone call from Spectrum yesterday, April 12 and said there has been some trouble in my area and they would have to upgrade the cable boxes. I stated there are no issues, and they said well not now, but in 5 days you will lose all channels and service. They wanted $174 to protect my account for 20 years. I found it difficult to understand what was being said. I said I was going to call Spectrum and he said no no no, I am Spectrum, look at your caller ID.

- Cleveland, OH, USA

I got a call from someone claiming to be Spectrum. They told me they needed to update my boxes or they wouldn't work. I asked how much it would cost and they told me it was free. Then I was told because I was a good customer they would lower my bill from $128.00 to $98.00 a month for a year. He told me to turn on my tv and standby for instructions while they update it. He then told me they would give me 3 months of free service (April, May and June). I was also told they would give me a free channel but I told him I hardly use the channels I have. I was then transferred to someone else who told me they would charge me $240.00 for the update and then once it was paid they would reimburse me. I told the lady that the guy I spoke to first told me it was a free update. She tried to get me to pay and I told her I wouldn't. She told me if I took the boxes to a local Spectrum store to be updated they would charge me $900.00. I was getting angry with her tone of voice and I asked her several times what her name was, she wouldn't answer and she hung up on me.

I received a call from someone claiming to be Spectrum saying they could lower my payment. I gave them my information and made the mistake of giving them my social and my credit card number. They gave me a phone number to call but when you call it sounds like a fax. They gave me a confirmation number and the name of a supervisor. I called Spectrum and they advised me that this was a scam, it was not them who called.

I was on my morning walk and got a call. The person new my name and pretended to be from Spectrum.

He said work is being done in the area and we are going around and replacing people's cable boxes and wanted to schedule a time to have a technician come. It all sounded legit and I said sure because I was thinking about getting my boxes replaced.

He asked about my account code which I said I didn't know. Then he asked for the last four of my Social Security Number which I foolishly gave since it all sounded legit. He then said all you need to do is pay taxes. He told me he could see that I pay by bank and he also saw the last few numbers of a credit card number which was not recognizable to me (I assumed it was another card that I don't use anymore).

I asked to just deduct from the bank. He said we need the credit card number. Luckily I was on my walk and did not have my wallet or I would have just gave it to him. He said ok, he'll call back in a hour which he did. By then I was totally suspicious. The first number 808 290 2000 couldn't be traced and when he called a second time with 808 376 1385, it turned out to be a number to an escort service when I checked later!

When he called a second time, I answered to just see if it was the same guy (it was) and I hung up. He tried to call again but I ignored it.

I Googled the phone number for Spectrum customer service and found 833-353-2882. I called and they answered as Spectrum, they looked up my bill and told me the amount I owed. I paid the bill over the phone by credit card and they text me the payment confirmation. I called Spectrum using the number on my bill the next day and they told me they had no record of my payment. I called my bank to dispute the charges and they told me the business that pulled the money from my account was called Fateh Freightways & Co. not Spectrum.

I answered a phone call today from a man claiming to be with Spectrum Sales and Promotion. His name was Edward Wilson. He said they are working with the Better Business Bureau and Federal Government to give senior discounts. I do not have the number that called. His employee ID number was G4009. At first it sounded authentic. He insisted on getting my Social Security number so I could receive my discount. I said I will call Spectrum and the ScamPulse.com to verify this. He got agitated. It sounded suspicious when he asked for my Social Security number. I did not give my Social Security number. I did give my my name and address. I thought it was authentic until he wanted my Social Security number. He was insistent. He knew I was a senior.

[BBB transcription via phone call from the consumer]

Consumer stated the business called stating they were Spectrum and wanted to save senior citizens money. They asked for social security number which pretty much ended the call. Consumer did not give anything but the last 4 digits full name and birthdate.

I got a call from someone claiming to be Spectrum. They said since I have been a terrific customer I could receive 40% off for the next 2 years. I would have to pay $600.00 up front in Target gift cards. I called one of the phone numbers they left me, I spoke to two people, one was Jeff the other was Shaq. When you call they even have Spectrum music in the background. They knew all of my information including my account number and security code as well as all of the charges on my bill. I called Spectrum and their fraud department told me this was a scam and they had me change my security code.

Promotion to cut bill in half from Spectrum for 2 years but have to pay the first 6 months of half the bill with a Target gift card loading it with a credit card and won't have to make another payment till December and telling you don't pay any fees on the gift card from the store you get it and tell them it is for personal use only not for a business and when you get the cards call the billing department and you have about 100 minutes to complete this transaction and you will receive a gift card for 100 dollars its called 100 minutes for 100 dollars don't be fooled

Spectrum text that said we could cut our bill in half. They needed the first 3 months paid up front to get the "deal". I called spectrum and they said it was a scam
