The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS listing read like a museum placard—build sheet, dyno numbers, impeccable restoration. When I requested a pre-purchase inspection, they claimed their facility didn’t allow third parties. The VIN on the invoice differed by one character from the one in the photos; they brushed it off as a “typo.” Against my better judgment, I wired the money. After that, the seller stopped answering calls and pushed everything to email, which slowed to a drip. No bill of lading, no pickup, just excuses; the money was gone and the Chevelle never materialized.

A Craigslist buyer’s guide claimed a 1952 Oldsmobile '88 sat “one county over,” but every request for the address met a fresh excuse—roadworks, flu, farm access pass. He begged for a same-day wire to stave off another bidder. After I sent it, he emailed a blurred title that misspelled the town twice. Courier tracking he supplied belonged to an unrelated parcel of shoes. The Olds never reached my driveway, and my calls now meet endless rings.
