The call itself immediately felt off. The person showed up wearing a hoodie over his head for the entire conversation. He was vague about everything — his background, his clients, even basic details about the role. He appeared to be in a very small, almost empty room. During the call, he asked if I could consult for him on something extremely simple.
After the call, I reached out to the recruiter, Sophie, to ask if I was officially set up to start work — especially since I hadn’t filled out any paperwork yet. She told me to go ahead and get started, and that we’d take care of the paperwork the next day.
I downloaded the files the client had sent me — another person from the “recruiting agency” was cc’d on the email. The files seemed generic and outdated, kind of like their website. I assumed maybe it was just poor branding or bad taste and went ahead and sent him my assessment. He thanked me and said he’d be sharing it with his client.
The next day, I received an email inviting me to create a profile on WorkGenius. When I read that the first transaction could take two weeks to process, I decided to hold off until the following Tuesday. Later, I had a question for Sophie, and when I reached out, she instructed me to log in using the email address on my resume and delete the account I had just created. I followed her instructions — and sure enough, the new client was already listed on my dashboard.
I went ahead and uploaded all my personal information: SSN, green card, bank account details. But things kept feeling off. For example, the portal already showed that I had logged one hour of work and had a 4-star rating — even though I had never submitted a timecard.
That’s when I really started digging.
I began looking up the companies and people I’d been interacting with. The phone numbers were disconnected. The business addresses turned out to be condos or buildings under construction. Even more suspicious — the “client” had supposedly worked for before starting his own business had the exact same address as the recruiting agency.
I ended up calling the building management company — and they confirmed that neither company was a tenant there.
