I was working on my laptop when it froze, and a screen opened saying to call the number shown. I couldn't get my computer to do anything ... shut down or anything, so I called the number. The person identified as a Microsoft Technician. He immediately took control of my computer and began showing me where I had been hacked. He did run at least two free programs to clean my computer. However, I discovered later that at the same time, he added malware/spyware to my computer. I authorized a payment in the amount of $200 for 5 years of "protection." I also received later an authorization form which clearly covers them. I do not want anyone else to fall for this scam.
