Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill

My organization ordered several toners for 2 copiers. A few days later an invoice showed up in the mail charging us an unusually large amount for these toners. They used Imperial Supply Center in Rowland Heights, CA as the company sending the invoice. Imperial Supply Center is a maintenance supply company, not a toner supply company. The scammer used a different P.O. box for an address than what is listed on Imperial's website as their address. Our contract with our copier company covers toners so I knew their shouldn't be a charge. I also checked with our company and they confirmed Imperial Supply was never contacted by them. The total invoice was for $1,064.93 and did list specific information that was correct about our copy machine. The invoice was vague on the actual toner products ordered though. There was just enough correct information to make you think it may be real.

My company just found this out two invoices in. We were going through our vendors requesting W-9's and I had no real contact information. After searching online, I only found one Imperial Supply Center for maintenance and truck parts in California. Upon calling the number on the invoice, it went straight to voicemail with a male saying "You have reached customer service" and I left a voicemail just to see what would happen. I am glad we caught it sooner rather than later however, it has definitely taught us to pay attention and verify who has ordered what from where in the company as we are now out that money.
