CEO Gift Card Request Reports & Reviews (1)

- Gallup, NM, USA

I received an email at 6:30am from an email address that showed up the same name as the CEO of the company I just started working at (I have not used this email address, or given the information to any 3rd party websites thus far) asking me to text him before I got to the office because he needed an urgent favor. I didn't get the email until I got to my desk at 8:30am. I didn't read it closely, I just responded. He said (now via text) that he needed a gift card for a meeting he was having that day and it was very urgent. I went to the local grocery store and sent photos of the available gift cards, but they didn't fit his needs. He specifically wanted an apple gift card but also was still unsure of what exactly he wanted--he asked me to go to a bigger store (I live in a rural ish area) and requested that I drive to the closest applestore or drugstore (30+ minutes away). I stopped at a drug store and sent another round of photos of the gift cards - this time there were apple gift cards. He asked me to purchase one for $500. I had not yet met my CEO (and I'm an intern) so I wasn't sure what his mannerisms were. But the person texting me was texting me very urgently and kept reacting to his own messages with an exclamation. I purchased the $500 gift card assuming I would be reimbursed. Right as I was about the sent the code, I had a moment of hesitation and reached out to confirm with another employee that this was the CEO's phone number. It was not. I did not send the code, and luckily someone in my family needed an apple gift card, but I spent about 2 hours of driving and stress and really was about to send the card.
