I was contacted by phone by a man named "Louis Murphy" and told me that my son signed up for a dual enrollment course at school (which we did together) and he told me that my son needed the said flash drive for the course. I was told that if I made a deposit of 249.95, he would send the materials and if the materials (flash drive) were returned within 30 days of receiving them, my deposit would be refunded to my card. Materials were purchased on 8/20/24, received the next week, and it was actually an ACT prep thing, which we never would have asked for our especially paid for, if we had known, because he goes to ACT prep twice a week after school. I immediately returned it on 9/13/24, all verified with receipts. After multiple phone calls and messages left, a person called me back and assured me that my deposit would be refunded within 7-10 business days of receipt of the flash drive, I have still not gotten my deposit back (over 30 days later), and no one will return my calls. The tracking number on the return receipt indicates the materials were picked up by an individual at the postal facility in Upland CA. After attempting to reach someone at the number given to me by "Louis Murphy" and my bank statement gives a number of 888-612-0489 (goes to the same old school sounding answering machine), still nothing. I looked at my bank account this morning and they took another $79.95, that's when I realized I had been scammed. Went to bank to cancel my card, get a new one, dispute the charges, and I'll find out within 10 days if they deem it worthy of refunding me (after having to take a ½ day off work to get this crap taken care of).

We found that he never needed materials for the course, they were all provided via online course. My information was given to a third party by Vol State Community College (or the scammer hacked their system to get my information), then they contacted me and presented falsely to me. I'm pissed and outdone!

Description

Called to confirm shipping address for ACT study guide and practice tests immediately after son signed up for ACT test at act.org. Identified himself as Owen Golden and provided follow up number of 8447000080. Said materials were free for 30 days but would be charged if kept longer than that. Need cc for if not returned. Knew my sons name and test date and my address. son did not provide any of my info when signing up for test and did not request materials. 249.95 charged to card. Cancelled card.
