The scammer showed interest in purchasing my sofa set on facebook market. They contacted me via facebook messenger. They said they would be down to pick the sofa up at 6 pm MST. This was about 330pm on October 2, 2023. They said they would use venmo. I sent them my venmo pay code. Then I received an email from venmo. Which I thought was legitimate. This email said that the name of the customer Name Jerek had sent money. It said that since my venmo account was not a business I could not receive the funds. Although, I could ask the buyer to send $300 more and my account would be set up for a business and then I was to refund the $300 back to them through venmo. All while on messenger this person that was supposedly going to buy the couch was acting like venmo was emailing them as well. They kept up with what venmo was saying. Although, the funds were not there. I transferred money to my checking so the $300 could go through. Venmo declined transaction. They then told me to process through paypal, zelle, or gift card in order to show proof that I was refunding them. All transactions I tried were denied. Paypal, zelle, and buying an amazon gift card. I told them that it was denied. They constantly wanted proof that I was actually denied. So being one that wants to be trusted sent screen shots of denied. Then they told me to go to the store and buy a gift card, or they will report me to the FBI for fraud. I then got the gift card took a picture of it and sent it still enclosed in the package. I told them I will give it to the buyer when they arrive to pick the couch up. They then said that they had to verify that it was real card. They told me to open it so, I did. I thought it was fine at that time. Sent the pictures to them. Went to sleep after so called venmo said that they will analyze the card. Well when I woke up the next morning, venmo said it was not valid. They kept putting this title on top saying immediately proceed with action. The said that the card did not work and that a specific gift card had to be purchased, gold steam, amazon, apple card. I feel dumb saying this, but I bought a new gift card, an amazon card. Repeated the same thing with a picture they told me the same thing to open it up and scratch the code. I don't know why I didn't stop at the time. In my mind I just kept thinking, I can't let this customer lose out on their $300. There was a number at the bottom of one of the emails, which I can't find now. It was from venmo and it said for help contact us. So I clicked on it, and it took me to text messaging. I then proceeded to text because I thought it was Venmo. The text messages went on to verify what I was getting in the emails. So of course I thought it was a real number. Then later they asked for verification of my ID. It sent links to ID.me told me to create and account. I did, then they told me to link it to the IRS then gave me a link. I did all of that like a stupid person. I really thought it was the IRS page put in my info. Drivers license, ss# and a selfie picture. Later after I did all that, they text me back and said that it did not work and wanted to do a mobile transaction. I did not respond after that. It finally dawned on me that it was a scam. I went to ID.me and deleted the account. I am sure they had time to get all of my information.
