I was contacted by a male claiming to be calling about Spectrums internet assistance program. I was questioning the whole conversation but he sounded authentic, confirmed information he had of mine, including account information. After the call I followed a hunch and called Spectrum back. They verified that is not something they would call for. An hour later I saw 2 mobile phones had been added to my account. I called again and stopped the order. I have since locked down my credit and reported my card as stolen.

- Louisville, KY, USA

Caller indicated they were with Spectrum and were giving me $30 discount on my internet, had my name, address and asked for 4 digit PIN/Security Code.

- Gowen, MI, USA

Phone number called me looking to pay for additional connection fees for internet.

Review: I received a call from someone claiming to be from Spectrum, and the caller ID displayed "Spectrum." I answered the call, and they immediately knew my name, asking if it was me on the line. I confirmed by saying yes. The representative then mentioned that they had received a service request to add service at a new location, and they asked if I had made such a request. I explained that I was not planning on moving, and they followed up by asking to verify my mailing address. That’s when I decided to hang up the phone. Called Spectrum to verify they did not make the call and they did not.

Notes:

The fact that they knew my name could be a red flag, as it might indicate they had access to personal information (such as from previous customer interactions).

The mention of a service request for a new location is suspicious, as I have no plans to move. This could indicate an attempt at phishing or fraud.

The request to verify my mailing address was concerning. While legitimate companies may ask for address verification, it’s usually better to avoid providing sensitive information over the phone.

Hanging up immediately was the right decision, as it helps prevent potential identity theft or other malicious activities.

Recommendation: If you receive a similar call, it’s best to hang up and contact Spectrum directly through their official customer service line to verify if they initiated any requests on your account.

Pre recorded from spectrum. Said id lose my 40% discount if i didnt cb that day. Called back , foreign guy , i hung up.

- Louisville, KY, USA

Caller identified as Spectrum customer service, offering a discount for service since my discount was ending. $29.99 per month for 3 years. The first 10 months was to paid upfront, with $29.99 per month afterwards. This offer was connected with a partner, Target, and a target gift card was bought for $300 to pay the 10 months. (Yes I'm dumb but I can't believe how dumb I am). Apparently the card was suppose to be 2 cards, not 1 like I had gotten so YES I fell again and bought another $300. After they found a problem with those cards, I finally woke up. So I'm out $600. These callers use (319)257-0249 and (855)511-0435 as their phone numbers and answer "Spectrum Billing Dept".

- New York, NY, USA

They called and left an automated voicemail:

“Dear customer this voicemail is to inform you that spectrum is removing the 40 % discount from your monthly bill as of today to reactivate this offer immediately please call the number shown on your caller ID thank you…”

- Schaumburg, IL, USA

Received the exact same call, I did not pick up — but automated message left in voicemail said that 40% discount is stopping today unless I call back immediately on the caller ID. Created a sense of urgency.

- Wesley Chapel, FL, USA

Received a call at 8:45 p.m. on 08.22.2024 from an individual claiming that I needed to set up my Spectrum Xumo box. I did not answer the phone but was suspicious due to the fact that the Xumo box in question is in non-working order, in a storage bin and not plugged in. This had been reported to Spectrum previously. I contacted Spectrum directly using the telephone number from my billing statement. They have no record of contacting me and verified that the telephone number that called me was not associated with Spectrum.

- Northfield, OH, USA

I received a voice mail on August 19, stating I will be losing my 40% discount and said to contact them, which I did. The gentleman put me on hold 7-8 minutes and then stated my bill would be $75.00 a month if I paid $950 up front and for one year I would not have to pay a bill. I told him I didn't have $950 to give and he said my service would be cut off.

At first when calling back 706-400-4142 and answered by Spectrum Insurance. Then transfered to "Martin" with I slight middle Eastern accent who repeated back my name and address but couldn't connect my phone number. After a rather long hold, I realised it was a scam and hung up. Several immediate call backs from 866-705-6003 from "Martin" trying to comfirm my internet provider and some of the packages I currently have. I immediately hung up and blocked both numbers...

Dear Customer this voicemail is to inform you that spectrum is removing the 40% discount offer on your monthly bill to reactivate this offer right now. Please call back on the number you see on your called ID thank you.

Pretended to be with Spectrum internet but wanted to be paid CVS OR TARGET GIFT CARD. THEY ALREADY HAVE MY HUSBAND CAPITAL ONE CREDIT CARD INFORMATION and was able to tell me the credit card that my husband had used to pay our last month Spectrum payment with.

Today I received a all from a "PAUL" claiming to be from Spectrum, and wanting me to give them my credit card number and Spectrum Account Number as well as other personal information claiming to give me a 35% discount for two years and a rebate of $100.00. I knew immediately that this was a fraud as we don't have Spectrum where I live, but he claimed he had my account pulled up. I got a phone number from him of (716)795-7402 which he answered when I called back to verify my suspicions. I contacted Spectrum and made them aware of the call. I, of course, gave him limited information, all false, and he swallowed it hook, line, and sinker! My attitude is when I discover that a caller is a scam artist I keep them on the phone as long as I can, maybe prevent someone else from getting taken, then I drop the bomb telling them I know they are scammers and then a few choice expletive's, some colorful metaphors, and hang up! Man do they ever get angry which is what I wanted in the first place so that maybe on his next attempt to scam someone, he'll start off angry and screw up his pitch! Works for me...

They said they were working Target to partner with Spectrum for discounts.

- Bryson City, NC, USA

Email received that said there was a special promotion with Target and Spectrum and that if I paid $360 in Target gift cards my spectrum bill was covered for one year. They then called me stating the same thing. I said, I’m not doing this it sounds like a scam. At that point the man said, to cancel you have to pay us $180. Again, no. At that point he said, we have your credit card number and we are just going to charge it. I never gave them any credit card info or any of my spectrum info. Sure enough, $180 charge appears on my spectrum account. I filed a credit card dispute and got my money back but I want to know how they got my card info, why spectrum processed this charge (spoke with them for over an hour and all they kept saying is, it was an over the phone payment). Feels like there’s an account breach with Spectrum but they deny it-especially since it is an account at a beach property and they called me on my ** home phone.

Person calls from NY state phone number, leaves a message to call a toll free number to get 50% off Spectrum bill. Call the #, sounds legit and the hold message claims they partner with Target. They cut your bill 50%, no new contract, no new equipment. The catch--you have to prepay 8 months of internet with Spectrum to get the deal. They confirm an email and send instructions to buy Target gift cards OR a Target credit card to pay Spectrum, but they cannot transfer you to the billing dept to take your payment. To get you to buy gift cards, they claim you can pay with either a Target black credit card or gift cards. Even if you have a Target card, they call it a "Redcard" because that's their trademark. I can find no black Target credit card, and that's how they hook you. If you don't have that card, then you have to go online to buy a couple Target gift cards and then call a different toll free number who will "accept" the gift cards as payment for Spectrum. Target gift cards can only be redeemed at Target, not to pay an outside bill, so don't fall for it.

I contacted Spectrum for my father, Thomas Sottile on 03/06/24. The representative I spoke with who said his name was Jason said my father had an old account and that he would be able to save him money by upgrading his account. My father had to provide his SSN and bank debit card in the process to get the order to go through. My father was later contacted by the Spectrum fraud department alerting him that he had been scammed. He has received a new debt card from his bank. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thank You,

Suzanne Sottile
