Person calls from NY state phone number, leaves a message to call a toll free number to get 50% off Spectrum bill. Call the #, sounds legit and the hold message claims they partner with Target. They cut your bill 50%, no new contract, no new equipment. The catch--you have to prepay 8 months of internet with Spectrum to get the deal. They confirm an email and send instructions to buy Target gift cards OR a Target credit card to pay Spectrum, but they cannot transfer you to the billing dept to take your payment. To get you to buy gift cards, they claim you can pay with either a Target black credit card or gift cards. Even if you have a Target card, they call it a "Redcard" because that's their trademark. I can find no black Target credit card, and that's how they hook you. If you don't have that card, then you have to go online to buy a couple Target gift cards and then call a different toll free number who will "accept" the gift cards as payment for Spectrum. Target gift cards can only be redeemed at Target, not to pay an outside bill, so don't fall for it.

I contacted Spectrum for my father, Thomas Sottile on 03/06/24. The representative I spoke with who said his name was Jason said my father had an old account and that he would be able to save him money by upgrading his account. My father had to provide his SSN and bank debit card in the process to get the order to go through. My father was later contacted by the Spectrum fraud department alerting him that he had been scammed. He has received a new debt card from his bank. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thank You,

Suzanne Sottile

The scam was to pay my Spectrum internet and phone at a discount through Target gift cards.

- Bay City, MI, USA • Mar 04, 2024

I was left a voice-mail stating I could save money on my internet. The only reason i was involved was my phone number is tied to the account and so is my bank account because I pay the bill. The bill is in my sons name. All calls were mimiced like the internet provider when called. I didnt provide not one piece of information, they had it all. Mine and my sons. They told me if i paid $420 up front i would get a discounted rate for the next two years but first 15 months would be taken out of what i put in. I said " this sounds too good to be true. They all spoke good English. He told me to have my son go into the spectrum app, he would then take off the upcoming bill, which he knew exactly how much it was. . Which he did. He then said go get 2 Target gift cards cause they are the ones sponsoring this funding. Once you do call back the billing number i gave you and then proceed to put the cards on your account. I bought them and did as asked. I asked if i could make sure the first one post before I give the second one. He said sure. He loaded the 1st card to my sons account and then sent him a spectrum email stating it was in the account. $210 was credited, so i did the second one. Same thing, so i eventually hung up. About 3 hours later i get a voice-mail stating i have a crital card problem. I call the number, same spectrum intro. Now i get a guy on the phone that is clearly a foreigner. He told me that the cards were red flaged and that i would have to buy 2 more and thay he would reinburse me for the other ones. I told him i didnt have the money. I thought it was a scam. He said" scam you mentioned the word scam, you shouldn't have done that. " he then said now im cutting off your cable and taking out $1,000 from your bank account. I told him i didn't have that much and pleaded for him not to do it. He said" im old, poor and that you deserved this laughed methodically at me and hung up. My son then called the cable company and told them they had a breach, they told us they didnt and there was no way they could take money out of my account with just the last 4 of my checking account. We asked for a supervisor many times, and got nowhere. I then called my bank told of incident, they shut down my account. I then called bank next day to tell them they did take money out $500. Now that transaction is in dispute. Since then ive called and got a case open with my credit card comp. that i bought the cards with. The store i bought the cards from through scam div., then called the gift card comp. They already used gift cards but company is trying to investigate that. They suggested to contact local police which i filled a police report. I also did one with the federal trade commission, and now the BBB, i hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. Recap.. They had everything about us. And tapped into everything. We didn't give them any information they had it all.

Representitive of Spectrum at a food for less offered me internet for 30 a month. When the bill came he signed me up for a 60 dollar plan. I called Spectrum customer service and they denied having that plan. When i threatened to cancel plan they magically pulled a 30 dollar plan out of their [censored]. They are all in on the scam.

Just a voicemail I received from the number. The caller ID showed Los Angeles which could be false. I called actual Spectrum and they said that number is not associated with them.

I rec'd a vm from Spectrum stating I qualified for a savings on my bill, I ret'd the call b/c I was wanting to switch to Spectrum Mobile b/c I had seen commercials about 1 line free with home internet service and I already had home internet service with Spectrum. The caller stated I was eligible for an internet discount and a cell phone discount but had to pay up front for 2 years over 2600 for both to get the discount. I was told it was sponsored by Target and I needed to pay with 7 Target gift cards at $384 each. At that time, I said no, I wasn't going to do it and ended the call. I called the number for spectrum 833-224-6603 and asked if this was legit and they said it was a scam and they were aware of the Target scam and not to send any money or gift cards.

A woman claiming to be a Spectrum rep. called with an offer to reduce monthly billing by 50 percent if we called 844-987-1966. This "deal" was offered as a Target/Spectrum promotion and included a 50 percent credit to our past bill. They knew our bill amount exactly and sure enough there was a credit added to our account 5 days before the call. They sent an invoice to the email account associated with our Spectrum account. We don't know how they obtained this very specific information.

We called Spectrum customer service and verified the 50 percent credit electronically added to the account. They even encouraged us to call the real Spectrum customer service number to verify the credit. So thinking this must be a good offer we proceeded with the process of buying Target gift cards. You can guess the rest.

Please, please, please run the other way if anyone asks you to pay for something with gift cards. This was an expensive $1400 lesson.

I got a call from men from India calling to say if I would buy two $250 Target gift cards from five different stores, then they will pay the balance of my bill, and I will only have to pay $50 a month for 10 months.

- Bradenton, FL, USA • Jan 10, 2024

First, the phone number I listed was where a voicemail came from to my cell phone, claiming to be Spectrum Services, offering to lower my monthly bill by 50%. They left a number to call back, 833-617-0749, "from 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific Standard Time." I had received this message one or two times previously and not called it. However, I have been disappointed with my service and bill with Spectrum. So, I decided to call them and see what the offer was. There was absolutely no indication that this was not Spectrum. The phone system had number choices to press. It said it was Spectrum Customer Service. And even had pleasant hold music. It was very professionally done. The "agent" who came on the line was polite and seemingly helpful. He was male and had an Indian/Pakistani/Middle Eastern accent. He said they would lower my bill to $88 per month for three years if I would pay the first six months upfront. I feel like I have been overpaying for our Spectrum service. So this was a very appealing option. It was what was necessary to pay the upfront, six months when I did not catch on. The man said the promotion was being done in conjunction with Target stores. I had not heard about a scam of this type and did not feel concerned. They gave me several stores where I could purchase two Target gift cards totaling a combined amount of $528, which would cover six months of service, and have no payment for six months. The man also offered a $75 gift card for completing the process within twelve hours. Then they got even more intricate by offering a courtesy payment to my Spectrum account for the current month. He told me to log in and see that it was paid, and it was. My unpaid monthly balance went to $0. So they accessed my actual Spectrum account and made a payment. I was later told by the Spectrum customer service call center that it appeared the payment was done with my own credit card, and I think they will have to explain how they allowed this to happen. He gave me a "billing department" number to call back...(855) 524-3880.

So, I went to the nearest Walgreens store and purchased two Target gift cards, one with $300 and one with $228, as was instructed. I called them the next day and as I mentioned before, their phone system sounded completely professional and businesslike, representing Spectrum. I gave them the numbers off of the two Target gift cards (which they confirmed was two cards). I was told "congratulations, your payment went through and you have your promotional offer."

I would have never known until the next month's billing cycle and I called Spectrum, but they were greedy and tried to "double-dip" me. I received a text message saying there was a problem with my payment and to call Spectrum billing at (800) 738-6089, or (855) 672-9901. Then a different man (same type of accent) had a much worse attitude, saying Target had ended all their gift card agreements with Walgreens, and while they would refund me the original payment, I needed to go out and repeat the process with other gift cards. Of course, I said that I would need the refund before doing that again and the guy got extremely rude and abusive, which was his ultimate mistake. Instead of arguing with him, I hung up and collected myself, realizing what was happening.

I then brought all the information I had written down and drove to the local Spectrum store and asked a customer service representative if they knew of the Target promotion. She immediately said it was fraud, handed me a business card with a number to call and recommended contacting the BBB.

I hope this information will help your organization in some way, hopefully help prevent others from falling for it, and maybe even help stop this and track down the perpetrators.

Please contact me with any questions or need for further information.

A lady called me from a Waynesville number and claimed to be with Spectrum Customer Services. She asked me if I was happy with my service which I replied “Yes ma’am.” She then asked me if I was happy with my bill and I replied the same thing. She then proceeded to reply”Perfect” and hung up. When I attempted to call the number back, I received automated response of “This number is no longer in service.” I knew then I had been scam called.

- Canton, OH, USA • Dec 18, 2023

I was contacted by a phone number +1 (303) 584-0392. The voicemail transcribed is exactly this. “ Hi there this is to inform you that spectrum has applied a 50 % discount on your monthly bill to keep this offer active. Please call back at. 8 4 4 7 0 9 7 3 2 6 From 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific standard time thank you and have a great day…”

I called the number and they explained that if I pay $600 or six months of my spectrum cable bill in advance , I would receive a 50% discount over a two-year period . The stipulation was that I had to pay the $600 with target gift cards as this was a joint promotion with target and spectrum. They also said that I would get a $75 prepaid Visa card for joining the promotion that would be overnighted to me. Once I went and purchased the gift cards, stupidly, I was told to call the number 888-705-2243 and give them the confirmation number of “SPT19462“ when you call the 8887052243 recording and prompts are almost identical in my opinion to what you would hear when you actually call spectrum.

The next day, when I did not receive a confirmation text as they told me I would, after confirming the deal, and that the gift cards were good, I I called back to see where it was, where they reported to me that there was a problem with the $600 target gift cards , that they were no good and it was an issue with Walgreens where I purchased them . They proceeded to tell me that I needed to go to a different location other than Walgreens and purchase two more gift cards

at which time they would send me a $700 gift card to compensate. When I said this sounds ridiculous and why won’t you just instead of sending me $700 just apply that amount to the promotion so that I am good for two years . at which point the gentleman on the phone said that that wasn’t possible and the other option I had was to take it up with the Better Business Bureau and I was essentially out of luck. I told them and not so many words what they could do with their promotion and immediately went to a spectrum store as they told me that I would have my services canceled. Spectrum store verified that this was a scam.

We called target and they confirmed that they don’t have any deal with spectrum. The 2 -$300 gift cards were used and I was scammed.

I am a business owner and I’m very very in tune with how horrible people are in this world. This is one of the most real scams I have ever witnessed. If they got me they’re probably getting thousands more. They were foreign, but I can’t tell you from what country. They sounded possibly Indian.

I was sent a text from 440 363 1605

Stating exactly this:

“ Your refund and promotion are getting canceled. Your services would be canceled with $1000 fine. Call 1(833) 690-2098 for any assistance.

Regards,

Spectrum”

I was looking to cancel internet service from Spectrum and I call a number I found on google search. Looks like the customer service number was for a fraudulent company that pretended to be Spectrum. I provided all my personal information including address phone number date of birth and SSN to verify the account. I also provided my credit card information and they wanted to charge me $50 for the cancellation. I realized it was a fraudulent company since I called again to spectrum to the correct number and I was told that I never talked to Spectrum based on her records and that they do not charge any fee to cancel the service.

I already submit the form but I am doing again since I have two numbers from the same fraudulent company

The number I called pretended to be Spectrum. I was asked personal information to identify my account including social security which I provided. Then I was asked to pay $50 for cancelation which was charge to my credit card. I later find out the the number was not for spectrum since I call gain but to the real number from the bill. I was inform that Spectrum does not charge for cancelation. I immediately stop any charges to my credit card.

I live in Saratoga Springs, NY. Last Monday, Nov 20th, my cable was acting up so I googled a customer service phone number for my cable provider - Spectrum. What I didn't realize at the time, I selected a phony phone number in between legitimate Spectrum links. The individual I spoke to indicated the auto pay system was down and they would provide me a discount with my paying now. I foolishly provided my credit card info. But after I hung up, it didn't sit right with me. I called Spectrum back (a different number this time) to verify that I did, in fact, speak with a legitimate rep. They confirmed it WAS NOT them and there was no credit on my account. I immediately notified my bank that there was a fraudulent charge on my bank account for $210. I thought that was the end of it; however, today I received a call from a guy at 347-774-3794 asking why I denied the charge, didn't they help me resolve my problem, get me a discount. I told him to stop, it was fraudulent activity and I was hanging up.

Unsolicited call using fake phone numbers. Claims to be representative from Spectrum with 50% off offer. Atlanta, GA area.

- Ballston Spa, NY, USA • Nov 30, 2023

I received a phone call and they left a message.Stated, "We are calling to inform you that spectrum has applied a 50% discount on your monthly bill. To keep this offer active, pelase call 1-866-408-6401. I called. They asked for my phone number for account. Stated I was up to date and I qualified for discount. I asked why the phone number was different from the regular spectrum number and they said because it was from the propmotions department. They then reinterated that I qualified for the discount on my serices so I asked what services I had already to test them. They replied internet and TV, which was correct (but good guess). I then said, well then how long do I have to decide? They responded within 24 hours. Clearly there were several red flags. I stated I would call back as I intended to call spectrum. They tried to press me and started to say all you need to pay is $680 now and then $76 a month. I laughed out loud and said, "and there it is. This is a scam." I would hope giving my phone number isn't an issue. They called that number so I would think they had it anyways. Yet it was likely a robocaller. Very frustrating.
