They wanted to know if I wanted to renew my trademark

- Brownsville, TX, USA • Mar 24, 2025

Claimed to be from the USPTO office asking for $450 for a declaration fee. No actual email correspondence from the USPTO for this request, and a search on the site confirmed my application had not even been assigned for review. Beware.

Has same phone number as another complaint. An email sent on a Saturday about scheduling an appointment on the following Monday federal holiday is always fishy.

In October, I was sent a notification that an attorney stating he was from USPTO/US Patent and Trade Office and that he was reviewing my trademark application. In addition, I was sent an invoice to pay a filing fee of $350, and I paid it. I was told my application was submitted and to await further instruction.

This week/Dec 2024, I was notified that I am ready to file, and was sent an official looking notice and a document to sign. I signed as requested and then the scammers asked for an additional $1200+ dollars (much of this was over text messages) from the number 725.726.8280 with the name Zachary Cromer who identified himself as my trademark attorney. Once I received the additional request for money I knew it was a scam and realized the e-mail threads had subtle errors, e.g. [email protected] (I didn't notice the gov.com before which was such a red flag!).

After filing for a trademark on the legitimate USPTO system, I was notified that I would be contacted by an examining attorney to verify my information and application. After a couple months had passed, I received the communication that I was assigned an attorney and scheduled a call with them. The first suspicious activity was that they weren't very responsive or professional, I had trouble with them making the appointment and keeping the appointment. Once on the phone interview, I had trouble understanding what they were asking me but in the follow up email it was indicated that I had filed under the incorrect category, the appropriate categories, and the refiling fee with a link to pay the outstanding balance. This is where I stopped because I could not get an explanation of why it was wrong or being recategorized. After several more attempts to reach that person via phone and email went unanswered, I logged into my account and saw it was still pending assignment to a reviewing attorney. I contacted TEAS main number again and they told me what I had received was not from them and indeed a scam. I did not provide any means for them to collect payment, but they do have personal information about me now.
