I normally don’t write reviews, but this experience was unacceptable and felt like a bait-and-switch tactic. A few days before my birthday, I received what looked like a legitimate email from Osaka Marketplace offering me a free birthday cake as a perk for being part of their rewards program. It seemed like a nice gesture, so despite the store being a bit far from me, I made the trip.
Once there, I did some shopping—bought meat, sashimi, and snacks—expecting to pick up my free birthday cake at checkout as advertised. But when I showed the email to the cashier, I was told it was just a test email and there’s no cake. No apology, no explanation—just a vague claim that they were “testing” emails.
If it was a test, why send it right before someone’s birthday? Why not clearly label it as a test? This felt incredibly deceptive—almost like a deliberate scam to lure customers into the store, knowing most people will end up buying something once they’re there.
This kind of practice may or may not be common in Japan, but in the U.S., this is absolutely unacceptable. It damages customer trust and loyalty. I walked out feeling scammed and insulted, and I want to warn others: Don’t fall for misleading emails from this store.
If this is how they handle promotions and customer communication, I won’t be returning—and I suggest others think twice as well.
