I was messaged about an online freelance editor job for $25/hr. My story is the exact same as the other victim that reported the exact same scam, detail for detail, name for name, amount and everything is the exact same.

- Minneapolis, MN, USA

No personal interaction - experience was the exact situation as reported already down to the job offer.

They also asked me to download Telegram as a means to communicate.

I applied to a job posted on Monster.com for a Data Entry position at Leidos on 2/10 and received an email from [email protected] on 2/11 to schedule an interview. The interview was done on 2/13 via skype messenger with a John Chang: Skype ID (live:.cid.7f5c71c89443853d) without video or voice call. I was offered a position and accepted. I was sent a formal offer letter from [email protected] and direct deposit form which I filled out and returned. This included my SSN and checking account info. I was then instructed to purchase a $40 Razer Gold e-gift card with my own funds to send to a vendor for a computer program install. I purchased via Amazon and sent the details to [email protected]. On 2/14 I was told I would receive a check via email to purchase equipment. I received photos of a check for $1,985.65 from [email protected]. I was told to deposit this check in my personal bank account. On 2/15 I was instructed to send $500 via Zelle transfer to Michael Garrington ([email protected]). My bank declined the request and that is when I began to think something was suspicious. Then I was told to purchase a $500 Apple e-gift card which my bank also declined. I called my bank's customer service and described the situation. They have since frozen my account. I then called the suppposed employer Leidos directly and the HR department confirmed they did not have any of my information on file. The representative also told me their company does not advertise for job openings. I then called Monster customer support to report the fake/scam job listing and they directed me to contact the BBB.

+1

I just went through the experience, I applied to a Leidos remote job and they sent me a fake check! I don’t know why Monster doesn’t take those fake Leidos job listings down!
