The guy said his name was Leo. He had my name, my date of birth, my address, my property address and other personal information about me. He claimed that I had an old Credit Card debt with Capital One owing over $5990 and that they had been unable to serve me the court documents. He said if I didn't pay a settlement amount of $3800 by that same day, that he would be filing paperwork in my county (knew the county by name) for a default judgment against my property. He is a creep and I hope the FEDs catch him. I reported him and his bogus letters to my state's attorney general's office. This is wire fraud (federal) and theft by deception (at my state level).

Stated that my credit report between 2007-2015 flagged in an audit for rent-a-center as having a past due account in collections and that it’s still valid because rent a center uses a tolling agreement in their contract which means the statute of limitations is void. They claim letters were sent and not received and an officer will be delivering a court summons if I didn’t pay the settlement amount today.

They had my name, current address, SSN and listed the car I just bought as an asset.

I attempted to validate the address provided and the building has no record of that business. Searched the CA registry of businesses and the name does not exist. Their phone numbers are VOIP and not owned by a company. The email address used to provide documentation has been flagged in other scams.

When asked they refused to give any more info that provided in the email letter

The phone number used was a NY number for an office located in Los Angeles. Called on an old debt that i alledgely owe from 8 years ago but I know I didnt owe this company a thing. They threatened to sue me for $3482.44 and a court date set for "immediately" which result in garnished wages, possibly suspension of my drivers license or any professional license. The woman claimed at first they had to have my payment today and would not be able to wait but then all of a sudden she was able to speak with her "supervisor" within a few seconds and then could hold it for two weeks. They offered the full amount or a one time payment for exactly $2000 less. Wants to call me back in two weeks to give me "time". What happened to the "urgent matter"? Smells like a scam to me.

On 7/27/26, I received a phone call from what sounded like a robotic or automated voice claiming that I owed money to a debt collector. Shortly afterward, I received an email with an attachment containing a letter that claimed I had an outstanding debt and demanded payment. The letter was marked “Confidential.”

I do not recognize this debt and am concerned that this may be a scam or fraudulent collection attempt. I am reporting this so it can be investigated and to help protect others from potentially deceptive or fraudulent activity.

They called and said I owed money to a VIP loan shop, saying I had taken out a loan.
