Type of a scam Online Purchase

Purchased a $300 vanilla gift card for a French bulldog puppy with debit card. The guy informed me I needed to buy one with cash. So I bought another one with cash for $300. He told me the other one would be put back in my bank account. I asked for tracking # and he gave me a shipping company with a tracking #, and that company emailed and then text me saying I needed to pay for shipping which is $210. So I bought another card with cash. Then they said I needed to pay $850 for insurance on the puppy. That's when I figured out its a scam. I've called the card companies to put a hold on them. Hopefully I can get my $ back but I doubt it. Lesson learned.
