Hay Scam Reports & Reviews (1)

We found a posting for someone that was selling hay on hayexchange.com listing his name as "Conway" and began texting with him. We agreed on 8/20/22 to purchase two loads of hay from him that was to be delivered on 8/21/22 but of course he required a down-payment through either Zelle or Venmo and then he would send us an invoice. I had a Venmo account so I paid the requested amount (stupidly). By that evening I was beginning to have suspicions about this being a scam after we shared his number with a friend of ours that was also looking for hay and they actually got him to let them call him. They asked where he was out of to which he replied "where are you?" so they told him and he replied with the name of a town about 45 minutes away (they also said he had an Arabic accent). They asked if they could come look at the hay and he said yes and that he would text them the address and then hung up. Then he wouldn't respond to them after that, so they let us know of the encounter and warned us to be careful. The next day (day of the delivery) his truck had conveniently "broken down" and it would be the next day, we told him that didn't work for us and that we wanted our deposit back. He would never address the deposit but said he would be there 8/23/22 with the delivery or could bring it even if no one was home on 8/22/22. We said that we had to be there and that we still wanted our deposit back, he still wouldn't address that. So I went back into Venmo and requested the down-payment back from the account that I made it to at which point the account blocked me. At that point I knew it was 100% a scam and contacted Venmo and reported the issue to which they replied "there's nothing we can do about it". I put a stop on my bank draft and now my Venmo account is frozen until I pay it off and despite me reporting it twice before that happened Venmo still paid them and is being no help at all. So Tuesday (8/23/22) came and we asked him where the hay was and he said it should be there soon, his driver had left a while ago. We asked "left from where?" at which point he cut off all communication. I have filed a police report with my local police department and reported it to the FTC. I also contacted the person that lives at the address that he listed on the "invoice" that he FINALLY sent us after we asked multiple times for it. That person is filing a report with the feds to go after him too. I reported the scam to hayexchange.com and so far they haven't pulled his posting or the other one that I reported belonging to "Michael" at a different number but the exact same hay posting as "conway" and in a couple of the postings he messed up and listed "Michael" in the description and then "conway" as the poster. From what I can tell most of the postings selling hay on hayexchange.com are scams so I would just stay away from that website. Also, always ask to see the hay before you pay for it even if that means a long drive to do it. The name he gave us for his "daughter's" Venmo account was Loreal Barnes. In an attempt to get more information out of him we asked what name he wanted us to list on the "certified check" we were "going to get" and he finally came back with Loreal John. Both of which I'm certain are fake, and I'm betting he forgot what fake last name he had given us the first time.
