- Los Angeles, CA, USA

I had a stressful, uncomfortable and disturbing experience with Haus of Portraiture. They are using the algorithm on Instagram and Facebook to target pet owners, posting paid/sponsored/targeted ads on Instagram and Facebook about a "fur baby" portrait contest and asking cat owners to enter to win a free portrait session. I entered, and they contacted me, claiming I had "won" a free portrait session for myself, my husband, and our cat. Once we arrived, it quickly became clear that this was a bait-and-switch scam. After the photography session, they put us in a holding room - Where there were video cameras filming us WITHOUT PERMISSION. Then we were isolated into another room where Stephan, their "art director," pressured us and aggressively tried to sell us packages--starting at $28,000, then dropping to $11,000, and finally attempting to force us into monthly payments of $500 or $200. Despite our ongoing and repeated refusals, Stephan refused to take no for an answer. We told him that we were uncomfortable, that we thought the session was supposed to be free, and that we were never told about pricing or fees. He persisted, trying many different tactics to force money from us over and over. This lasted for over an hour and a half. I was with my husband so I didn't feel unsafe, but if I had been a young woman alone in the room with this strange and angry man, I would have felt extremely uncomfortable. And I know from their Yelp reviews that many women have. They require a $200 deposit hold on your credit card, and I belive that most people do not escape receiving their money back. They are extorting people, playing on their affection for their pets, pressuring clients, and refusing to give refunds on their deposits. Many people on Yelp have reported the exact same experience as I have laid out. https://www.yelp.com/biz/haus-of-portraiture-santa-monica?rr=1 - This is a SCAM and a DISHONEST company violating many best business practices.

Too good to be true. I should’ve known how unorganized they were because they would email me and text me “LAST DAY” almost pressing this great deal agenda. They asked for $200 down and they would reimburse me on the day of.

I originally signed up on an instagram AD and they reached out to me via text, email, and then through phone. I spoke to a Teresa who seemed extremely nice. SCAM!

I applied to a contest on social media, and I received an email a couple weeks later that I had been chosen for the giveaway of free family portraits. As I was on the phone with the ‘coordinator’ I asked if they need any money for taxes and she said no it’s free. Then said we need to collect a $300 deposit which made me feel this was a scam. I asked for the address to look up the location and the building is not marked with a sign for this company/business and again I felt this does not seem legitimate. I hope the city looks into this contest the company runs every month so that people are not targeted.

I entered contest on Instagram for a complimentary portrait session called "Dogs and their Hoomans". details said no money required. (Instagram handle @HAUSOFPORTRAITURE)

i was "selected" as a winner and contacted by woman from Haus of Portraiture. She explained the details of the portrait session, then demanded $300 to complete reservation. She said this was standard for all of their customers, and i asked why the payment was required when i entered the contest. She said it was only to hold the spot and would be returned upon completion of the session. She said that the payment would be kept if I were to cancel less than 2 weeks before the photo session. I refused to pay and told her to give her "prize" to someone else. She was not rude, she had a kind voice, but it was unfortunate that money would be required for a complimentary prize.
