The scam appears to work by convincing a supplier that they are dealing with a legitimate business. The target supplier is emailed a 'price request' or RFQ for a significant volume of electronic equipment (MacBooks, tablets etc.). If the supplier responds to the price request, they are then sent 'account information' that includes the name of our bank relationship manager so that the supplier can verify that our company is a customer of the bank. The supplier is then emailed a purchase order for the delivery of the requested electronic equipment.
We have been contacted by a range of companies, who are not current suppliers to our business, questioning the pricing requests and seeking to verify information. We are not aware of any suppliers who have supplied product in response to the fraudulent requests. However, as the scam targets companies that we do not have relationships with, we cannot be sure if this is correct.
We have taken the following steps to address this issue:
•filed a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Compliant Center;
•sent a cease and desist letter to the delivery address noted in the fraudulent documents;
•advised our bank to check all account verifications requests with us via telephone; and
•alerted our employees regarding the issue and notified our trade references.
