My mother began receiving letters stating she owed $169.08 for unstated and unknown services. When we called the number on the bill they said they had to charge us to tell us why they were charging us. When you scan the QR code on the letter it simply shows a random series of numbers that are also on the payment portion of the “bill”. When we received the second letter it had all different phone numbers to call. Letter states the account has been “referred to our collection department” and then later in the letter states “We may be forced to assign this account to a collection agency.” A lot of threatening language is used such as “immediate response is required”, “urge you to act”, “URGENT”, etc.

I noticed that my grandmother was being charged monthly for my AOL account (which is free). My bank stopped payment on the transaction. We started receiving letters in the mail stating that they were going to send her to collections. I called AOL customer service and was told that I don't owe them any money because I have a free email account. They also stated that the phone number in the letter is not associated with AOL.
