I recently started a business, and a few weeks ago registered my company as an LLC with the South Carolina State Secretary department. A few weeks after my LLC was approved by the state secretary, I received a letter from South Carolina Business Filing congratulating me on starting a new business, and that I have some items pending, including obtaining an EIN, Labor Law Posters, and Certificate of Existence. I thought they were affiliated with Secretary of State, so I paid the amount ($449.84) due for those necessary items. After paying the amount, I saw another letter in the mail stating that I needed to pay $115 with another and I started questioning the validity of the organization. I contacted the State Secretary department, and they said that indeed it was a scam, and that I should contact my bank to file a claim. I'm not sure how this third-party company obtained my records of filing an LLC or personal mailing address and wanted to see about investigating this matter further. Thank you

I recently applied for an LLC in the state of South Carolina - I received a letter from this entity, something in my gut said it felt like a scam, and sure enough I found an article from 2022 from the Secretary of State's office saying this is in fact a scam and to contact them if you receive a letter like this (which I did). In addition to reporting it to the Secretary of State's office, I wanted to make you aware of it as well. It looks very real, and someone less savvy will certainly fall for it which breaks my heart.

I just filed for a business LLC, then I got two letters in the mail - one from South Carolina Business Filing Center and from Compliance Division Solutions. Both clearly impersonated government, the Secretary of State and the IRS, and acted like they could issue EIN’s, Labor Law Posters, and Certificate of Status’. They demanded payment, giving a deadline. Turns out, it’s completely fake and they’re impersonating government entities and functions.

The scammer sent a letter in official letterhead and with official formatting/wording stating that the business entity that needed to also purchase a Certificate of Status, Labor Law Poster, and EIN. I ended up paying for the Certificate of Status and EIN via their website. I also put in my Social Security number.

Very official looking document. Telling me to pay $399.89 for important document I NEED. Has a .org website and make themselves appear to be from the state.

I called to confirm and the person who I spoke to said they are charging for their services that are free.
