Type of a scam Romance

My mother has met a person online claiming to love her, care for her, and be her "saving grace". They began emailing each other, never having physically seen each other. His story is vague; works as an independent electrical engineer with contractors in Europe and Egypt. His family was killed in a car accident years ago, he is semi-retired and looking for love. My mother, a divorced, lonely 72 year old woman fell victim immediately as he began asking for large sums of money to complete his contracts in Egypt. Stories such as his equipment was faulty and needs 1200.00 USD to keep working. The sum is close to $5,000.00 currently. He refuses to give any personal information when asked; just resorts to how much love there is between the two of them and cannot wait to move to her location and be with her for eternity....but before that, needing additional financial assistance to return home to the states of which he receives through Western Union. Classic cat fishing scam. My mother believes this is true love...and I fear this will continue until she has been financially drained, in addition to heartbroken, and used by a person who doesn't exist. Any direction will be greatly appreciated.
