The job was posted on Indeed. They responded quickly to my application with instructions to message the hiring manager to schedule an interview. He proceeded to ask standard interview question via the messaging app then quickly offered me a job. I was suspicious but thought I'd see where it went. He later emailed me a check and a list of materials. I was instructed to deposit the check into my bank account and purchase the materials. At this point I said it was odd he was doing this without having signed any paperwork and I would not proceed without first talking to my would-be supervisor in person. He said he would void the check and ceased communicating with me. The address on the check was for a residential home in Houston, but the company's website says they are exclusively in California. There are no staff members or job postings listed on the website, and a few grammatical errors scattered through it. It looks slick, but all the information is very generic and easy to fabricate.
