I saw an ad on Instagram for Jack and Jane Boutique's "going out of business sale" with deeply discounted items. I clicked through to their website, it looked legitimate upon initial inspection, so I purchased a pair of jeans in early March. An item arrived in late March that was a very flimsy knockoff of the item pictured online. The item pictured online was high-quality denim with a high-waisted silhouette and belled bottoms. They had accents like darts, pockets, and attractive seams. The item that arrived in the mail was made of a thin, silky polyester material, did not have pockets or darts, had bright white stitching that was poorly executed (threads hanging out in various places, etc.), and had a baggy, boxy cut that did not match the cut or silhouette of the item that was pictured on the website. I contacted them immediately and asked for a refund, explaining that the item that arrived was not at all like the item in the picture. They proceeded to provide very complex return instructions to a warehouse in China, with extra tax paperwork and costlly tracking requirements and noted that all of this would be at my own expense. They also said that if the item got hung up in customs, that it was not their responsibility. They offered me 20% of my money back as an alternative to returning the item. I responded more firmly, letting them know that I'd be filing a fraud complaint if they didn't provide a full refund for the item. In the meantime I decided to look into their company to see if others had been through a similar experience. I learned that they are a shell company that scams people by running internet ads for closeout sales, then selling grossly inferior goods (or in some cases, sending nothing at all) while unscrupulously collecting customers’ personal and financial data during checkout, including full names, home addresses, phone numbers, credit card details, and more, which they then sell and use for nefarious purposes. Research indicates that Jackjaneboutique.com is likely part of a larger interconnected scam network based in China. I immediately contacted the fraud department at my bank, disputed the charge, canceled my credit card, and changed my passwords. I also notified the company that I would be reporting them. If it's helpful for me to send side-by-side images of the item as pictured on their website and the item I received, I'd be happy to provide that. I mostly want to make sure that they aren't able to continue doing this to other people.
