I contacted a breeder of a dog breed I had been looking for and was responded to immediately. Their website (Giannas Heeler Pups) was very legitimate looking and offered exactly what I wanted. The scammer asked for a $250 dollar deposit for the puppy, made through Zelle, and asked for a screenshot of the confirmation page for proof. I did this and then was told to wait for the paperwork then I could pick up the puppy. A few days went by then when I asked if the papers were ready they said yes, emailed me a hand written bill of sale with all my information on it (appeared legitimate) and said I could pick up the next night. Later that day the scammer messaged me (all through Facebook messenger) that the dog had been taken to the vet for a final check up and everything was fine but that they didn't have enough money to pay the vet and leave so they needed me to send another $350 which would be deducted from the final payment. THIS was when I knew it was a scam. I refused and said I would be at the provided address the next day with cash. They kept repeating the same language that they needed the money to be sent so they could get the puppy "prepared". I went back an forth with them even asking for the vet's number so I could call to verify and they said it was their brother who did the vet work (this was also a Sunday when no vet is actually open). At this point I told them I wanted my deposit back or I would report them and post warnings online. They promised to send the money back and went dark.

The next day I got a call from the number I had Zelle'd money too, he said he was getting requests from me to get money returned. He claimed that he was an actual dog breeder and that the scammers must have used his number to complete the transaction and skimmed the money before it got to his account because he didn't have record of the money. When I explained what had happened he was so apologetic and offered to find me the dog I was looking for!!!! Even though he did not breed that specific dog, he happened to have a cousin in my state that did. We went back an forth and his cousin just so happened to have the dog I wanted, but wanted a deposit! I refused and said thank you but it'll be cash or nothing. He never contacted again. This appears to be an ELABORATE scam with multiple levels of deceit involved.
