Type of a scam Home Improvement

This man placed an ad on Craigslist with photos of landscaping services. After discussing the work that I wanted to do and email communication he came to my home to discuss the project. He showed me photos of his so called work. Gave me a contract and we agreed on a start price. His contract looked unprofessional and wasn't extensive. I started to grow weary of him after that meeting. Although I felt uneasy I still wrote a check for a deposit on his work. However, as soon as he walked out the door I immediately starting looking into his company. The first give away was his address. It was of a UPS store (the one provided)... I immediately logged into my bank account and cancelled the check. I furthered my investigation only to find his real full name and YELP complaints and on many other websites. With many references to his scams and poor work. He is a known scammer in Austin. I don't know how he continues to work. I called him and told him that I found bad reviews about him and would not be using his services based on what I had found. He informed me that he would tear up the check. That was on a Wednesday. He attempted to cash the check on Friday and I was charged the $30 fee. HOWEVER, based on all that I had found about him, I got away easy compared to others. Here are links to him.
