I google searched Columbia Gas company VA and made a call using the phone number that populated first within my search. I believed I was calling Columbia Gas of Virginia and reached a customer service department/Billing Department. I asked if I reached the correct department and the rep confirmed that I did. In setting up new service I was asked all the necessary questions to start service including providing my SS#, date of birth and new address start up. Then I was informed that I would have to pay for a deposit and start up fee as well as furnishing my driver's license number (DLN). I started to become a little leery when the rep could not provide answers to my questions; then stating that he would get fired if I didn't provide my driver's license number raised even more concerns and a red flag. This is when I started having doubts and regret because all the other personal information is mandatory except providing a DLN over the phone. I told him I would call back at a later date. I then went online using my desktop computer and googled Columbia Gas of VA. I retrieved the phone number that was on the website , which was different from the one I previously called. I was told by the gas company that they would never ask for a DLN over the phone. If they required it, you would have to go onto their website and upload the information. Also the phone number that I initially called was NOT one of theirs and they would never give out a personal phone number such as the rep had done. This information had confirmed that the original rep was an imposter and a scam company. I called back using a different phone. When I asked to speak to the original rep I was told he was busy on another line. They also sounded quite foreign in speech. When the new rep had answered the call I noticed he did not use a company name just answered the call saying "customer service department". I found that response strange because he did not identify his company name. When asked several times why he did not use the company name that he represents he kept going around in circles to not answer my question, then placed me on hold, and then said I had called Columbia Gas of Virginia located in Oklahoma!! HA!!! This was false information due to having a previous conversation with CG of VA and they had informed me they don't have corporate headquarters in Oklahoma. Then he further stated that they service all states, which didn't make any sense at all. I then called the gas company in Oklahoma to further investigate this company and they informed me that it was NOT one of theirs. PLEASE BEWARE of this company who is scamming people and do not fall prey to their falsehood. I told them they were a scam company and would report them to the BBB.
