I received a call from a person that said that she wanted to let me know the price was going up on the toner we use for a printer we have. She faxed a confirmation form, and I realized at that point that we do not do business with this company - we get our toner for this printer as part of an agreement with the company that makes the printer. While perhaps not stated outright, the person implied they were the company we ordered the toner from. This was unsolicited, but since I do order toner cartridges at different times, it wasn't until I received the fax that I realized this was an attempt to put us on the hook for ordering something we didn't want from a company we haven't done business with before. While this may not be illegal, it certainly seems highly unethical. She did call back, and when I said that we didn't order from them, she said that she just had just wanted to see if we wanted the cartridge at the old price. In other words, in the original call, she at the very least implied we ordered from her company, but in the second phone call, when she realized I was on to her, she said that she was just trying to see if I was interested in purchasing the toner. We are a non-profit organization that provides services for homeless and people of lower income, so the attempt to try to get money from us seems especially galling.
