Total money lost $200
Type of a scam Home Improvement
An individual - Don Wisdom(??) - stopped by our condo on 4/13/22 and asked if I would like to have him and his son (Robert Wisdom??) replace our lanai screen. Quoted price was $200, and the work would be done the following day. Wanted payment upfront using a check from a local bank. The check was issued for the $200, made out to Robert Wisdom, and was cashed within 15 minutes of writing it. The following morning, we received a call advising us that the work would need to be rescheduled to Monday, 4/18 due to illness. On Monday, 4/18, Don Wisdom called to advise that his son had to make an unexpected trip to Colorado - the work would need to be rescheduled to Tuesday, 4/26. Tuesday came and we got a call that a scheduling mix-up had occurred, and the work would have to rescheduled to Wednesday, 4/27. We have not heard anything since.
My neighbor "fell" for the same scam on the same day we did.
I learned a relatively inexpensive but meaningful lesson in dealing with this person. Don't trust anybody without doing some homework on who you are dealing with. Plus, do not pay any contractor until work is completed.
